Why going abroad?

Influenced by the people around me. Modern architecture originated in the West, so I still want to go and see it

What impressed you the most when you are abroad?

It should be the construction of public facilities because this is something we can feel firsthand every day. It may be related to reasons such as history, culture, and social structure. Although the construction of public spaces and facilities here may seem to have good design intentions, the experience often falls short in many aspects.

What do you miss the most about China?

People, things, each one can be found in the random corners of the city, wandering freely.

Will you come back? Why?

Yes, because there are people and things I miss.

Is it more distinct to view China in a different environment after going abroad? Any thought?

Having one’s own path of development is crucial. Along the journey of growing up, there will always be voices of doubt, whether in learning, designing, or living. What’s important is to have a heart unaffected by others and to continue striving forward.

What are the educational characteristics of your school?

I feel that the topics at Columbia University don’t impose significant restrictions on the direction of outcomes, and there are relatively few limitations on presentation methods. You can freely unleash your imagination in design. In regular teaching, there’s also a blend of more discussions on social issues and reading of relevant literature.

What are the characteristics and interesting points of your firm?

The most interesting office I’ve stayed in should be BIG’s. The New York office is very spacious, with cool lighting and a very well-equipped model room. The most interesting scene I’ve witnessed is Bjarke riding a scooter to inspect the office, while his secretary follows behind, briskly carrying his water.

Who is your favorite artist (in wider range such as art, music, movie)? What is the influence?

完全同意“yes is more”

Actually, it’s Bjarke Ingels. Back in undergrad, I really admired his designs and would often emulate his analytical diagrams and design language. Some may criticize his designs for not appearing as logical as his diagrams suggest, and for being overly focused on form. However, after interacting with him and participating in some mid-design discussions, I found that his design process is actually very logical. I completely agree with “yes is more”.

What fascinates viewers the most in your portfolio in your opinion?

设计受到“yes is more“的影响居多。

The influence of “yes is more” is prevalent in my design approach. In life, I have a tendency to be anti-affectation, which also reflects in my design philosophy. I don’t particularly enjoy designs that seem contrived or deliberately confrontational. In reality, design doesn’t always necessitate one party conceding; conflicts can be integrated and differences can be harmonized. If conflicts and differences can be integrated into a new discourse, it can serve as a viable solution. In my own design process, I strive to move in this direction.

01.
From haze to snow

This project is based on an open topic, which is brownfield restoration. However, the chosen direction ended up being air purification. During the selection process, it was discovered that the city has a serious smog problem. Due to skiing, there was a good understanding of the principles of snowmaking machines. It was found that the diameter of smog particles and the size of the condensation nuclei for snowmaking machines are similar. Therefore, it’s entirely possible to use smog instead of the fine mist originally used for artificial snowmaking. This not only saves water resources but also consumes a certain amount of smog, achieving air purification. Additionally, it can reactivate previously abandoned areas by using ski resorts.

The project site is very large. In order to preserve the existing public space and vegetation on the site, four huge tower buildings rise at the four corners of the site. The distance between the long sides of the towers is 300 meters. Each tower can also serve as an anchor point, connected by bridges with similar cable-stayed structures. At the top, a large steel truss structure is used to complete the “roof” of the large-span structure, and an artificial snowfield is suspended between the four towers using steel cables.

The relationship between the architecture and the site aims to activate the space with new uses while preserving as much public area as possible.

The design would have felt like a huge structure that was difficult to build, although the reference to the suspension structure of the bridge gave it a certain implementability. But in the face of the endless sci-fi architectural masterpieces emerging in Middle Eastern countries today, it does not seem so impossible.

02.
The big U

The second project is the first one I encountered in my work, it’s called the Big U, located along the Manhattan waterfront in New York. This is a protective landscape planning project that has received $335 million to enhance the resilience of southern Manhattan, protecting the city from the impacts of future storm surges, while also providing social and environmental benefits to the local community.

Overseas NO 128 Fu Jindian

The project surrounds downtown Manhattan, stretching from West 57th Street all the way down to Battery Park in the south, and then to East 42nd Street. It covers a 10-mile-long low-lying geographical area. The design envisions resilient infrastructure for southern Manhattan, where flood protection measures are not just walls between the city and the water, but rather a string of pearls composed of social and environmental facilities. These facilities are tailored to each distinct community along the Manhattan waterfront, protecting them from flood hazards, enhancing resilience along the shoreline, and making the waterfront more accessible and attractive.

I think one of the great aspects of the project is the extension of the coastline, which not only achieves the goal of flood resilience but also addresses the safety issues along the elevated areas. It’s widely known that the subway and the spaces under the FDR Highway in New York are not particularly tidy or safe. A significant part of the problem is the lack of sufficient pedestrian traffic crossing under the elevated structures to reach the waterfront. While there are some piers and small mixed-use developments along the waterfront currently, they are far from adequate. If public spaces can be increased as designed, along with commuter ferry terminals and enough dining options, it would greatly improve the accessibility of the eastern waterfront’s public spaces. Sufficient pedestrian traffic would break the sense of detachment between the elevated structures and the waterfront, enhancing the connectivity between the waterfront spaces and the city.

Actually, the design has also proposed the possibility of removing the FDR, but given the already congested situation of Manhattan’s transportation system, it feels like this proposal wouldn’t be easily adopted. If the FDR were removed, however, the waterfront landscape would be even more attractive.

03.
Oceanix

The third project is Oceanix. This is a project I participated in the second round of design with UN-Habitat. In the first round of design, there was no specific site; it was just assumed to design a floating city on the sea surface. However, later on, we found Busan, South Korea, as a port to serve as the site. So, based on the previous design, we started the second round of design with an actual site.

Several key designs in the proposal include public agriculture, shared culture, zero waste, and freshwater autonomy through rainwater collection and seawater desalination. At the same time, the aim is to achieve modular and scalable construction.

The buildings in the Oceanix floating city are not taller than 7 stories to ensure a lower center of gravity and to withstand strong winds and severe storms.

It’s somewhat ironic that the Deputy Executive Director of UN-Habitat stated, “Our goal is to ensure that all coastal areas in need can afford sustainable floating cities. It should not be a privilege for the rich.” However, during the design process, local leadership in South Korea consistently hinted at wanting to incorporate various privileges exclusive to VIPs in every corner of the project. It’s sobering to realize that from design to implementation, from utopia to reality, there are significant challenges and obstacles.

04.
Project Rise

This was a competition I found quite interesting. It was an invited competition with seven companies participating. The site was in Saudi Arabia, where they wanted a 2km high super tall building and master plan design. Because of its exceptionally tall height, this design required different scales in all dimensions compared to previous projects.

Overseas NO 128 Fu Jindian

The client really admires the design of Singapore Changi Airport, so they hope that the interior of the tower’s podium can have a similar style. Our design theme is a 7-story oasis, where each evacuation floor and special functional facility are merged into 7 halos expressed on the façade (at night).

Overseas NO 128 Fu Jindian

I can share some of the passed-over design concepts from the process. It can be seen that the structural requirements due to the height of the building were immense, with the tower’s scale being astonishingly large. If the building were placed next to Bryant Park in Manhattan, it would be approximately the size of nearly nine city blocks in terms of the podium.

Overseas NO 128 Fu Jindian

When reshaping the skyline of Riyadh, the scale compared to regular high-rise buildings would indeed be quite exaggerated. The only downside of doing participating such designs is that if they are ever built, it may be many years in the future. Nonetheless, I still hope that Saudi Arabia and some Middle Eastern countries can construct some extraordinary designs to bring new vitality to the world.
