Appreciations towards Tania Rollond for providing the following description:

Intrigued by the possibility of one (or several) things becoming another, and images or objects on the border of legibility and abstraction, Tania makes visual puzzles. Her drawings collapse elements from the physical, remembered, and imagined worlds into one another – hints of a roofline or a table can be partly teased out, but remain ambiguous. These are drawings about perception, in which her aim is to capture or even create a feeling of uncertainty, a situation that is irresolvable.

In the series of “between coming and going”, it is the end of autumn, at dusk. It is the moment of Octavio Paz’s poem ‘Between Going and Staying’ where “all is visible and all elusive”. The eye drifts, the mind sifts, and memories become objects. The works is displayed in the Clay Intersections at the Australian Design Centre, Sydney. Curator Cath Fogarty presented the work of eight contemporary makers who take a range of innovative approaches to making and working with clay.

“nightfall” series of works was made for Home@735, an art gallery located in a terrace house in Sydney’s Redfern. The monthly shows, curated by the gallery’s directors Anthony Bautovich and Madeleine Preston, always offer a new and interesting mix of artists – this show, 17.08.16, included works by Sue Beyer, Rosie Deacon, Zoe Kirkwood, Tania Rollond and Kirsten T. Smith.

Although the ‘nightfall’ works were made for a separate exhibition, they are really part of the same cycle of works, so the above artist statement still applies. In both series I was interested in unsettling habits of perception, and exploring the hazy border areas between defined states – so the images blend fragments in the hope of feeling familiar but uncertain (between representation and abstraction), and the forms of the objects sit on the border of functional and sculptural – some are obviously vases, some can operate as vases when inverted (but are displayed upside-down as sculptures), and some are completely non-functional. I hope this uncertainty encourages the viewer to take a longer, slower look. They are also rich in hand painted detail for the same reason.
