Appreciations towards Child Studio for providing the following description:
British designers Child Studio have transformed an old London post office in St John’s Wood district into a Japanese restaurant. This affluent leafy neighbourhood with its red brick facades is home to many celebrated Londoners, including Sir Paul McCartney, Kate Moss, Keith Richards and Ewan McGregor. The late modernist building of the post office provided a rich source of inspiration for the designers. ‘We were fascinated by the unique story of this building and aimed to capture the nostalgic atmosphere of 1960s London, paying tribute to the modernist public spaces of the era. The design evolved around the bold geometry characteristic for this period and juxtaposition of simple materials: wood, glass, clay and steel,’ – commented Alexy Kos and Che Huang, the founders of Child Studio. The famed Abbey Road crossing is located around the corner from the restaurant, offering another glimpse into 60s London.

The heritage of the space has been respected and highlighted. The walls across the entire space are clad in dark cherry wood panelling and the shallow alcoves are decorated with a rotating selection of artworks. Child Studio devised a suspended coffered ceiling in a soft blue hue, and the grid pattern motif continues with the floor, finished in black quarry tiles.

The space is subdivided with a large semicircular glass block partition that gently filters the dual aspect daylight whilst forming a generous leather-upholstered seating booth at the back of the space. ‘It was important for us to create a range of different seating scenarios and balance the convivial atmosphere with more intimate nooks and crannies’ – said Che & Alexy.
