DIY CREATES SALZBURG’S SICKEST SKATE PARK

Take one derelict house, add a bunch of top skateboarders, throw in a few tonnes of building material and what do you get? The coolest skate spot in Salzburg, created by skater Philipp Schuster and friends inside a once glamorous hunting lodge.

Skateboarders are famous for being able to build kickers and rails with nothing more than a few bits of wood, some nails and a piece of metal piping, so it should come as no surprise that giving one of Austria’s top rippers eight tonnes of building supplies and turning him loose on what used to be a charming hunting lodge in the mountains over Salzburg is going to end up producing something pretty special. Sure enough, less than one week after being handed the keys to the rundown building the crew led by skater Philipp Schuster had created without doubt the coolest skate spot in the city. “As soon as the estate agent team RAUSCHER and the developer DOMUS asked me if I had any ideas on what to do with the house before its demolition in a few months, I knew I had hit the jackpot,” smiled the Vienna- born pro. “I invited a few mates to Salzburg to bounce a few crazy ideas off each other. Once we had a plan, we got down to work and went about turning our vision into reality. The result is a park which was just as fun to plan and develop as it was to skate!”

The small rooms and tight corridors meant that the crew had to come up with some pretty ingenious solutions in order to create a skater’s paradise inside what used to be one of the city’s most exclusive hunting lodges. One of the first decisions taken was to get rid of the old- school chintz sofa and built a mini-pipe in its place, while the bearskin rug in front of the fireplace was quickly ditched in favour of a grind rail. The flatscreen TV on one of the largest walls in the living room was also removed to create a huge wallride. “Before you start building anything it is important to understand the location and its characteristics. It’s a bit like meeting a person for the first time. Once you know what is possible, you can really get to work using your imagination. In fact, the most insane ideas often turn out to be the best,” said Schuster of the unique DIY project.

After a sick session at their very own top-secret skate spot, the crew headed off home – not forgetting to lock the door behind them and hand the key back to the owner. After the success of the project in Salzburg, they are now on the look out for other unique locations. As Schuster explains, it is possible to create a sick spot pretty much anywhere: “The main thing is to use your imagination. If you do that then there is no limit to the number of cool places to skate.”
