Arriving in Shanghai with the memories of nature

 

“乡村的生活经历,塑造了我的自然观,也成了激发摄影直觉最重要的一部分。”

我的老家在湖北恩施,鄂西的一个山水小城,跟沈从文笔下的湘西差不多,有清江河和吊脚楼,同样也是土家族苗族聚集的地方。在儿时的记忆里,所有的生活都跟自然和乡村有关。春天有漫山的野花嫩绿的麦田,夏天有暴涨的山溪聒噪的蝉鸣,秋天有收割完稻子的梯田,冬日则变成寂寥的雪乡……山里四季分明,时间很容易就被感知,对于童年的小伙伴来说这里有探索不尽的乐趣,连绵的树林,成片的梯田,隐秘的山溪,串成一个自由而无边的小世界。我在村里读完了小学和初中,所以这种经历被深深地烙在童年的记忆里,尤其在上海这样的大都市生活多年以后,你会发现这些潜在记忆深处的东西,会开始慢慢的发酵,散发出某种能量,并深深地影响着你跟这个世界的对话方式。这一段乡村的生活经历,塑造了我的自然观。四季轮换,万物生长,所有的事物都在记忆中缓慢叠加,我想一种道不清说不明的美学系统就这样悄然建立,像山间的清风,秋天的落叶,冬天的晨雾,瞬息万变而又像快门般定格永恒。在后来的摄影工作中,这种能力转换成一种非常重要的观看之道,也成了激发摄影直觉最重要的一部分。

I was born in Enshi, a small town with scenic landscape in western Hubei, which is also a region where the Tujia and Miao people live in. All my memories of childhood is related to nature and the countryside. With the distinctive changes in four seasons in the mountain area, time was easily perceived, providing an enjoyable playground for kids like me to explore. I finished primary and junior high school in the countryside, and this is the reason why that kind of experience was deeply imprinted in my childhood memories. Life and growth in the countryside determined how I look upon nature, and also gave me the ability to perceive and capture the harmonious state of everything in the world. Later in my photographic work, this ability was transformed into a very important way of seeing, and became part of the inspirations that aroused my intuition in photography.

对摄影的爱好促使我转行
My passion for photography led me to change careers

 

“从大学到工作,摄影作为爱好一直坚持了下来……觉得自己拿相机也能够做出一些有价值的事情。”

我从大学就开始喜欢摄影了,直到毕业参加工作,摄影作为爱好一直坚持了下来。我大学念的是建筑系,所以刚毕业就在一家设计院工作,平时除了在公司加班,大多数业余时间都拿来拍照了。记得那会儿经常一个人拿着相机在街头游走,甚至在上下班挤地铁的途中也拍了不少照片,这些生动的都市表情对自己似乎是一种莫名的慰藉,拍别人似乎也是在拍自己,一种迷茫而孤独的状态。当时对于摄影没有太多的目的和规划,仅仅是特别喜欢拍照和记录这一件事情本身,每当拿起相机穿行在街头,你会感觉自己像个隐形人,在跟陌生人及这个城市进行交流对话,乐趣无穷。就这样设计院工作的三年时间一晃而过,自己也在这种日常的散漫式拍摄中感悟和成长。

至于如何转到建筑摄影,除了专业引导,似乎更多的是无心插柳。在工作期间,除了喜欢街拍,也拍摄了江浙沪大量优秀的建筑,仅仅作为一种参观性质的记录摄影,那种拍摄状态非常放松,没有任何商业需求的包袱,也没有艺术创作的雄心,是纯粹出于一种专业的偏爱,但正是在这些拍摄中,为我转向建筑摄影埋下了伏笔,也成为接触建筑摄影初期一个重要的自我启蒙。

幸运的是,在此期间认识了很多热爱摄影的朋友,那段时间,刚好又参加了一个胶片暗房工作坊,让我认识了更多摄影同行以及摄影艺术圈的朋友,在跟他们接触中,才算真正打开我对摄影认知的大门,看了很多之前从未看过的画册,了解了摄影史上从未关注过的一些名家,包括历史上一些很重要的展览,影响力如此之大,让我第一次真正感受到摄影的魅力跟能量。也正是在这个时候,激发了我想要转行成为职业摄影师的冲动,觉得自己拿相机也能够做出一些有价值的事情。

I have been fond of photography since I was at college, which continued as a hobby until I graduated to work. I first worked for a design institute, and apart from working overtime, I spent most of my spare time shooting photos. I did not have any specific purpose or plan for photographing, and the only thing I knew I love to do was to document things by photos.

During this period, I was fortunate to meet a group of friends who were also passionate about photography, and the experience of participating in a film-developing training workshop allowed me to know more fellows in the photographic art circle, which literally opened the door to my knowledge of photography. For the first time I felt the true glamour and energy of photography, and it was also at that time I was motivated to become a professional photographer, feeling that I could probably do something valuable with my camera.

拍摄建筑的主要关注点
Main concerns of architecture photography

拍建筑对我来说似乎是踏入了一段轻松愉悦的旅程,加上兴趣做铺垫,比起办公室生活,感觉这是一种久违的自由。建筑师的工作经历对摄影当然还是有不少帮助的,这让我更从容地去理解建筑师的意图,并从设计师的角度出发去解读一个建筑,探索它们的结构跟空间,材料和细节,对拍摄计划的制定,镜头语言的组织,都起到了客观理性的指导。

但在实际的拍摄过程中,很多时候其实完全忘掉了自己建筑师的身份,回到摄影本身的工作上来,在空间中体验,游走,观察,然后按下快门。在这个过程中,我想构图,即相机取景,是决定性的第一步,构图决定了你观看建筑的方式,以及你想表达的主题和内容,很多时候,决定一张照片构图成败的是在同一个机位的细微调整,前进一步,或后退一步,以及用什么焦段的镜头,呈现的结果会大不一样。此外影响一张照片好坏的决定性因素就是用光,建筑摄影常常以自然光为主,但自然光不受人为主观控制,所以某种意义上来说,整个拍摄也是一个追光和感光的过程,而且现实中自然光环境是综合且复杂的,对于同一个空间,不同的季节,天气,以及同一天中的不同时刻都会呈现出不同的自然光氛围,摄影师选择那个合适的契机很重要,需要科学的判断和敏锐的洞察力,以及与之付出的时间对抗。

最后,拍摄最重要的或许还是现场的摄影直觉,这是一种情感的力量,摄影师需要迅速跟场地之间建立一种瞬时的情感联系,它来自身体在漫游,沉浸之中对空间的一种回应,直至调动所有积极的因素,找到按下快门的那一刻。

The experience of working as an architect has certainly influenced and benefit my practice in photographing, which allows me to understand buildings more composedly, and to explore their structure, spaces, materials and details from the perspective of a designer. This will provide an objective and rational guide for me to draw up the shooting plan and organize the formulation of the lens language. 

Composition, or framing, is the first and crucial step in an actual shooting process, and it determines the way you view the building as well as the subject and content you want to convey. In addition to the composition, another decisive factor that influences your outcome is the use of light. Architectural photography is more featured by natural light that can not be subjectively controlled, so in a sense photographing is a process of chasing the light, and also, experience the light. Finally, a rather important thing is the presentative feeling, which means the photographer needs to establish an instant emotional connection with the site. It comes from the experience that the photographer roams his body and immerses in the space until all the positive factors are mobilized to be able to seize the very moment to press the shutter.

在过去几年的拍摄中,印象最深的一次应该是台州美术馆的拍摄,当时本来是拍施工记录,但碰巧却记录了这个建筑最经典的一刻。当时建筑整体结构刚刚完工,建筑顶层面向山色的开口,还没有加玻璃幕,呈现出最纯粹的混凝土平行筒拱空间,自然山色毫无遮挡地映入眼帘,我调整机位,让对面其它建筑屋顶最大化消隐,并采用自拍的方式将自己作为一个“人”的元素纳入画面,此刻建筑,人和自然三者之间的对话似乎呈现出一种最佳状态,后来建筑完工,装上了幕墙之后,这种对话反而被削弱。后来这张照片被使用的频率也最高,我在想,是什么让一张施工过程照片成就了这个建筑最经典的一刻。后来才知道,这个项目因为业主方的原因在施工和装修过程有诸多无法调和的矛盾,最后呈现效果虽然并没有如建筑师所愿,但并不妨碍建筑师最初希望这个美术馆作为一个纯“架构”的构想,在多年以后,面临复杂的使用和改造,甚至成为废墟,但最终留下的仍然是这个原始的架构本身。我想这张照片正是凸显了此刻的意义,在这样一种戏剧性时刻,仿佛在现实工地与未来“废墟”之间,超越时间而存在。

Throughout the past experiences, one of the most memorable photos was taken from Taizhou Art Museum: I was supposed to document the construction process, but accidentally captured the most iconic look of the building. There were many irreconcilable contradictions during the construction and interior design phase due to the client’s reasons, but it did not prevent the architect from initially conceiving the museum as a pure “framework” that could standing immutably, despite the excessive using and reforming, or even at last becoming a ruin. I thought that the photo of the art museum had just highlighted the essence of the “framework” . At such a dramatic moment, between the physical structure and the “ruins” of the future, it seemed to exist beyond time.

什么是好的建筑摄影
What makes good architectural photography

 

“摄影无法逃脱记录跟表达的双重使命……建筑摄影对于建筑来说应该是一个影像档案,记录着建筑生命周期的每个时刻。”

摄影无法逃脱记录跟表达的双重使命。记录基于现实客观的物质世界,这里面本身就暗含着一种真实的指向,这也是照片区别于其他图像的最大不同之处。对建筑摄影来说,这就意味着照片中是现实存在的建筑,而不是一个概念图或纸上建筑,这个时刻对建筑师来说意义非凡,这也是效果图无法替代摄影作品的根本原因所在。但如果一张照片ps过度,那么离真实也就会越来越远,这样跟效果图也就没啥区别了,摄影在这个过程中失去了它的现实意义。

但在现实的传播中,摄影需要面对不同人群和各种使用目的,这也是一张照片在表达层面需要面临的挑战。所以什么是好的摄影,每个人的标准都不一样,需要看你从什么方面去评判。我觉得建筑摄影对于建筑来说应该是一个影像档案,记录着建筑生命周期的每个时刻或某个时刻,从施工,到建成,到投入使用,甚至到最终成为废墟或毁灭,这些无数的时刻都有意义。最后这些照片不仅仅是用于一时的网络宣传和报奖,而是在几年甚至几十年后,依然会成为建筑珍贵的影像资料,并满足出版和展览等一切其它需求,成为人类社会活动的一种见证,如果从这个层面来看,建筑摄影就变成了一件比较严肃的事情,真实客观的记录就显得尤为重要,而不是追求一时魅惑的色彩或夸张的视角,甚至不惜造假,成为网红一时的消费品。

Photographing is endowed with the dual mission of documenting and expressing. The recording of physical world based on objectivity implies a realistic point of view, which differentiates photographs from other forms of images. But in real communication, photography has to face with various kinds of people and purposes of use, and this is also what a photo needs to deal with in terms of expression. Therefore, what is good photography depends on what aspect you judge it from. Personally, I regard architectural photography as an image archive, recording the certain moments in the life cycle of a building, from its construction and completion to being put into use, and even to its destruction and eventually becoming runs. All of these moments are meaningful. From this perspective, architectural photography becomes a more serious matter. If photography is a language of taking a fragment of time from reality and turning it into graphic, then good photography is about bringing that fragment back to the moment when it was taken, restoring what else was filtered out by the lens, and providing the viewers with an immersive experience of the scene. Only at that moment can photos speak for the building and fulfill its mission of expressing.

怎样做优秀的建筑摄影师
What makes a good architectural photographer

 

“我觉得商业拍摄和艺术创作之间没有明显的分界线,唯一的区别就是摄影师的态度是否真诚,只有用心和赋予思考的拍摄,以及诚实的表达,这是靠近艺术的第一步。”

“I do not think that there is a contradiction between commercial photographing and artistic creating. The only distinction here is whether the photographer is sincere with the process of creation. Being honest and reflective is the first step towards art.”

 

优秀的建筑摄影师,应该是发自内心喜欢建筑跟拍摄这两件事情,这一点很重要,这是做好很多拍摄非常重要的一个前提,因为喜欢才会促使你花更多的时间去跟建筑独处和交流,只有在这些跟建筑共情的时光里,许多隐密之处才会逐渐显现,进入你的镜头世界。其实在很多时候,一个优秀的摄影师早知道自己要拍摄什么,像一个导演一样提前把一切都设想好了,剩下的只是需要花时间去等待那一刻的出现,又有很多个时刻,则是现场的灵光乍现,看似不经意的一瞥,却有意外的收获。我想也只有这两种状态结合,才会让你的拍摄缜密有序又充满惊喜,在感性跟理性之间游刃有余,捕获到建筑的灵魂。

其实我现在做的大部分拍摄都是建筑师的商业委托,本质上是属于一个服务行业,所以满足客户的需求或者自己的拍摄跟客户的需求对味是很重要的一个点。当然在工作的时候,自己给自己设的这个标准和底线很重要,商业不是一味的满足和迎合,只有在这个标准之上,坚持自我,你是才是真正丰盈而自由的。在工作之外,我也有一些自己在拍摄的项目在进行,谈不上艺术创作,出发点只是去拍摄自己想拍的一些东西,业主就是自己,反而带来的不是绝对自由的,最大的挑战变成要拍什么以及怎么去拍,我经常会陷入一个迷茫和自我否定的状态,我想这也是摄影有趣的地方之一。

但整体上来说,我觉得商业拍摄和艺术创作之间没有明显的分界线,因为我觉得所有的记录都是有意义的,商业拍摄也会给自己积累很多现场经验,让自己更好的认识建筑这一创作媒介并去思考它们背后更广阔的社会属性。如果说这两者之间有分界线,我想唯一的区别就是摄影师的态度是否真诚,只有用心和赋予思考的拍摄,以及诚实的表达,这是靠近艺术的第一步。

A good architectural photographer must have the true passion about both buildings and photographing, and would love to spend massive time getting alone with them personally. The empathy with the architecture will guide you to uncover those hidden places. Meeting the needs of the clients, or making an agreement on what you both want to achieve is an important point. The freedom and richness of your creative work should be on top of this standard. But overall speaking, I do not think that there is a contradiction between commercial photographing and artistic creating. The only distinction here is whether the photographer is sincere with the process of creation. Being honest and reflective is the first step towards art.

摄影器材与照片后期

“在器材方面,我的选择没有太苛刻,以适用为前提……在工作之外,我比较喜欢手机摄影……手机摄影就像速写之于设计师,也是一种捕获和收集灵感的方式,它让我保持一种状态,时刻用影像的思维去观看世界。”

“My choice of equipment basically depends on the fitness for use…I also like to use my cellphone for shooting things…Shooting with a cell phone allows me to keep myself in a state that I could observe the world with the thinking of images.”

 

在器材方面,我的选择没有太苛刻,是一个比较中庸的态度,以适用为前提,每次我添置器材或者是置换镜头都是因为出于表现的需要。数码相机几乎每一年都有技术和功能上的革新,选择那些可以为表现加分的新产品还是很有必要的,但是一味的追随会让自己陷入器材的局限跟困境。

对于在选择数码和胶片这个问题上,我个人现在是以数码相机拍摄为主,因为我觉得人类科技一直在进步,数码相机的出现和革新也是这个时代的产物,选择用数码相机创作,也是一种契合时代的选择,用当下的技术解决当下的问题,这本身就是一种很当代的做法。当然我也不抵触胶片相机,胶片相机有其特殊的呈现方式跟效果,这是数码相机无法替代的,包括大画幅相机,呈现的效果跟品质是别的相机很难取代的,现在也有很多数码系统,如Phase One XT系统,Alpa系统这些顶级中画幅相机,属于数码时代的王者,除了价格昂贵之外,恐怕很难挑出其它毛病了。但在胶片和数码之间,我觉得有一点是共同的,就是需要珍惜快门,这是一种摄影修行,不能因为胶片的小众就去放大情怀,不能因为数码的优势就乱按快门。一切技术手段最终都是为拍摄主题服务,内容本身才摄影师应该追求的永恒之路。

在工作之外,我比较喜欢手机摄影,这也是因为我觉得手机是我们这个时代最重要的一个产物,影响并改变了我们每个人的生活,现在手机摄影基本上已经普及,可能再过几十几年回看我们生活的这个时代,手机摄影绝对会成为摄影史上一个无法回避的大事件,我们对影像的需求比以往任何时代都更需要,手机摄影让摄影变得如此大众,我们迎来了一个前所未有的影像泛滥的世界。手机摄影之于我,是工作之外很好的一种放松方式,它的便捷让摄影变得更加纯粹简单,对于摄影师来说,手机摄影就像速写之于设计师,也是一种捕获和收集灵感的方式,它让我保持一种状态,时刻用影像的思维去观看世界。

对于建筑摄影后期这一块,我觉得后期是摄影一个必要的过程。只是在数码暗房时代,后期的时间成本和技术成本大大降低,很多时候也可以让一张拍的不好的照片起死回生,好的后期是为了更好表达拍摄主题而服务,经过必要的裁剪,调色,修饰而达到相对理想的效果,这里面有很多是主观的判断,但每个摄影师应该要有自己坚持的标准。最重要的是在拍摄初期就有一个利弊权衡,能靠现场拍摄解决的问题就不要想着可以留给后期。所以重拍摄,轻后期,是我一个很重要的摄影原则,这也是诚实表达的一个基础。

My choice of equipment basically depends on the fitness for use. I purchase new devices or camera lenses only for performance needs. I think there is one thing in common when using film cameras and digital ones, which is that you must cherish each time of pressing the shutter. You are never supposed to press the shutter randomly just because you are holding a digital equipment. This could somehow be an “ascetic practice” in photographing.

I also like to use my cellphone for shooting things. For me, it is a good way to get relaxed from work, and it makes shooting much easier. Mobile photography for photographers is quite like sketching for designers, which is one of the various ways of capturing and collecting inspiration. Shooting with a cell phone allows me to keep myself in a state that I could observe the world with the thinking of images.

Speaking of post-production, I think it must serve to better express the subject of the shot, after all the necessary processes including cropping, colour modulating and retouching to achieve relatively ideal outcomes. These are largely subjective decisions but photographers should have their own standards to adhere to. For me, the standard is to focus much more on shooting itself than on manipulating the photos.

在大家眼中,建筑摄影似乎是一个非常小众的行业,不过比起其他类型摄影师,如婚礼摄影师,从业人数的却是要少很多。不过这两年,建筑摄影从业者有暴涨趋势,我觉得这也是一件好事,也是必然要经历的一个过程。好是因为说明建筑摄影市场需求旺盛,大家越来越重视建筑摄影的价值。从业人数变多了,大家竞争也就激烈了,虽然一开始会有各种乱象丛生,但是这也会促使大家向着更好更多元的方向发展,大浪淘沙,最终一批优秀的机构和个人才会留下来。

我本人也并非摄影科班出生,在这从业的四年多时间里,还没有对中国建筑摄影的历史及现状做过系统调查和研究。当我们谈论建筑摄影,更多的是在谈论欧美的建筑摄影师,比如贝歇夫妇很早就把建筑作为重要创作对象,并形成了有影响力的学院流派传承。中国的建筑摄影,我想更多是伴随着国内地产行业和城市化的脚步才逐渐兴盛起来的,尤其是中国持续和进行多年的城市化,吸引了全球的目光,这为建筑摄影的兴起创造了必要条件,尤其是近几年国内网络的普及和自媒体的崛起又迎来了一个全新的媒体时代,这让照片的需求空前巨大,加上业内一些评奖机构推波助澜,建筑摄影快速成为一个热门的职业。这对我们来说其实是一个很大的优势,有数不完的商业机会和拍摄题材。但优势与困境往往也是并存的,在目前我们这个建筑摄影小圈子里面,其实大家更多的时候属于一种各自野蛮生长的状态,希望将来会有一些个人或机构走出来,为建筑摄影加持,让建筑摄影这一小众的艺术生态更加完善成熟,也让建筑摄影师能够参与到更广阔的社会实践中,发挥它最大的价值,也期待会有一大批优秀的建筑摄影师走出国门,奠定中国建筑摄影的国际地位。

There is strong market demand for architectural photography in China and people pay more attention to the value of architectural photography. With the in crease in the number of professional photographers, the competition has become fierce. It may lead to problems and chaos at the beginning, but also push the photographers to improve themselves in different directions, and the excellent practicers will eventually stay.

In this small circle of architectural photographers, most of us are growing in a cruel and passive way. I really hope that in the future there will be  more and more individuals or companies that can take the lead in accelerating the growth and perfection of architectural photography industry, encouraging the photographers to participate in a broader social practice and give full play to its maximum value. In the meantime, a large number of outstanding practicers will come forward to help China’s architectural photographers step on the international stage.

studioFF的成立,摄影与视频
Establishment of StudioFF, Photography and Video

其实摄影是一个非常个人的行为,我非常享受一个人工作的自由状态,加上拍摄委托比较饱和,所以这几年的时间并没有去刻意宣传。但在这几年的摄影实践中,尤其是当我开始尝试去拍视频的时候,我发现需要一个团队去执行你的想法,从写脚本,到拍摄剪辑,一个人的局限就很明显。去年我成立了一个工作室,studio FF, 我想这是我个人品牌的一个延伸,我们想专注于建筑视频这一块,这对我来说也是一个全新的领域,未来探索空间还很大,但我相信我们会在这一块做的很好。目前我们的品牌视觉和网站都在筹备上线中。

我想平面摄影跟影像视频之间是相对独立而又彼此联系的关系,二者都无法被替代。之于摄影,当你凝视一张照片的时候,就像去读一首诗,你可以根据自己的节奏去停顿回味,你需要慢慢入境。之于视频,就像听一场音乐会,你会很快地就被带入到这个节奏跟氛围,高潮就在这个时刻发生了。照片跟视频的结合会更好地去诠释一个建筑,也会让建筑的受众者更广,我想这也是建筑文化传播一个很重要的目的。
