Installation x Exhibition
Before the Pudong Reading Festival, curator Xie Wen came to Mur Mur Lab, seeking for a cooperation of an interesting exhibition. It is a familiar task for Mur Mur Lab that connecting people, exhibition content and business operation through an installation design in the atrium of a successful social business center. By breaking the boundaries of installation space and exhibition content, and creating immersive architectural spaces, the projects always bring people a bit of non-daily changes. What will be presented for the design collaboration between installation and exhibition this time? After all we had a wonderful cooperation last time, which is a dreamy modern installation in a Chinese traditional spaces.
Reading Space for Individual
Discussing the boundary between paper book and e-book is a popular topic, as the electronic reading is gradually changing our way of living. It needs no more word to explain how the e-book and other electronic products influence our behavior. In this design project, we want to invite the audience to explore this installation by their bodies, and having their honest answer in response to this issue. The installation is composed of 552 pieces of paper, creating a path where the narrowest point could only allow one person to pass through. As you are walking through the path, the light and shadow are dancing gracefully with the gentle swing of those book pages. The thickness that those paper pages constructed is like a castle, which filtered the time and blocked the sound, making the space free from the obstruction of outside world. After wandering in this path that going through the atrium, we wish you could feel refreshed and rejuvenated. Subsequently, you could have better reading experience. All the paper used in the installation is available for recycling.

Walk out of your cave,
the world is waiting for you like a garden.

The curiosity occurred during the installment was resolved on the opening day. It seemed like everyone had their own interpretation of this work when passing through this passage. Performance artist Marina Abramović, after she finished her work <Rhythm 0> in 1974, said “once you decide to hand the decision right to the public, you are not far away from the death.” The interaction between the installation and audience is out of the expectation, especially the kids, who can always find their unfettered fanciful imagination in this work. All those uncontrollable behavior is exactly the most intriguing part of this installation. Only when the space is endowed with the publicity, can its potentiality be stimulated in its maximum.

As the wind gently breezes, the pages swings. Just like all the design done by Mur Mur Lab, after all those hard time, the work always presented poetic moments for the people on-site. After all, there is only one type of heroism that is to still be in love with life, even when you see the truth of it. After all we come to this world, we desire to see the bright warm sun.
All the other time is to listen quietly,
You pause for a while,
Because any form of life should not to occupy the time that exceed its need for expression.
The space between pages
Like all the shopping mall, this almost 30 meters long installation met the challenge that it could only be installed during the night. Mur Mur Lab designed a light structure, which is easy to work out. The steel grid structure is segmented into 24 pieces, hanging on the original timber frame in the atrium. All of the paper pieces were connected with the tight wire in the easiest way. The work was finished in three nights.

The wind blows through the vacant corridor, waking the flower and all creatures on the other side of the space. As you are walking though our empty passage, does it stir up some feelings in your heart like a spindrift? If such touching moment can change a bit of the reading and behavior pattern of the people who experienced it, I considered that the initial intention of curator and Mur Mur Lab has been achieved.
Wind breezes through the space softly,
wandering in between every pages,
composing sound like tender whisper,
stirring up little ripples in the heart.
