JBI shared their works: Shortlist for 2018 Society of British&International Design Awards:

尽管黑白灰备受当下时代的喜爱，但是对JBI来说，色彩总能赋予空间更多的个性，调动着人们的心情。位于波托马克河岸的Sequoia餐厅，正是对这一理念的阐释。JBI通过明亮鲜艳的色调，描摹出它别具一格的独特魅力。Sequoia创立于1990年，隶属于Ark餐饮集团。 2015年，Ark集团决定将其翻新，并邀请Jeffrey Beers International担纲设计。于是，从设计之初，JBI就肩负了创新Sequoia的使命。Jeffrey Beers预示新的Sequoia将成为“先锋派”空间的代表，既能作为客户展示的当代艺术的展馆，又能保留其作为餐厅的主要功能。2017年，Sequoia融合了艺术展馆与高档餐厅的双重身份，以全新的模样展示在众人面前。

Although gray tones are very popular at the present moment, JBI believes that color is able define a space’s identity and enhance people’s mood.Sequoia, located on the banks of the Potomac River, is an perfect illustration of this idea. JBI brings their unique charm through bright and vibrant colors. Founded in 1990, Sequoia belongs to Ark Restaurant Group. In 2015, Ark decided to renovate the restaurant and commissioned Jeffrey Beers International to reimagine the space. From the beginning of the design, JBI was on a mission to bring innovation to Sequoia. JBI envisioned the new Sequoia as an avant-garde space to showcase the client’s contemporary art, while always remaining mindful that this gallery-like space is and must still function as a restaurant. In 2017, Sequoia presents a new look by integrating the identity of both art gallery and iconic restaurant.

餐厅采用高大的落地窗，贯穿地面和天花，让户外的露台和波托马克河的风光一览无余。阳光透过落地窗洒入室内，整个空间干净而明亮。白色成为了空间的装饰背景，大面积的留白，恰到好处地突出了各个艺术品的造型和色彩。窗纱同样采用白色，与背景融合在一起，减少对视觉的干扰。同时窗纱的轻柔与墙面坚硬的质地形成对比，让空间更轻盈。

The floor-to-ceiling windows offer the customers a stunning view of the outdoor terrace and Potomac River. Sunlight spills into the dining area, which looks clean and bright.Thanks to the white background palette, all of the artwork are able to stand out with impressive modeling and finish. The new sheer drapery are also white and blend with the background to reduce visual interference. The soft texture contrasts against the hard wall, which helps to lighten and soften the dining area.

The vibrant gemstone color palette becomes the visual focal point of the space, being applied on multiple artworks and furniture. The vibrant gemstone color palette of the upholstered dining chairs contrasts with white walls.

日本灯具艺术家Hitoshi Kuriyama设计出的装置艺术，由913件定制玻璃管和200个霓虹灯管组成，跨度超过125英尺，悬挂在餐厅大厅内；

Japanese light artist Hitoshi Kuriyama designed an expansive installation, which comprises of 913 custom-fabricated glass rods and 200 neon tubes. It spans more than 125 feet suspended in a ‘path and branches’ across the dining room ceiling.

Ark Restaurant founder Michael Weinstein purchased Sol LeWitt art certificates, which allow him to use foundation certified artists to replicate specific Sol LeWitt artwork in multiple spaces throughout the restaurant. Sol LeWitt wall drawings are found along the curved wall of the Mezzanine dining area, and twist at the cross, creating an expansive vision. Additional wall drawings are comprised of cascading colors staggered together, which create a dynamic feeling that contrasts with the simple modeling of the space.

The newly designed bar, located on the main dining level, gently curves along the long window wall. The radial shape of bar softly echoes the curve of the terraces and outdoor plaza.The bar’s dark grey Caesarstone top incorporates inlaid brass accents and has a white terrazzo face that blends into the bar area’s floor. The pure color, smooth texture, and tailored lines give the bar a neat and minimal look. Light fixture by Castellani & Smith announces the restaurant’s distinctive, art-filled ambience.The glass and brass bar shelving glows and acts as a beacon. The transparent structure calls additional attention to the restaurant.

为了满足承办私人宴会的需求，JBI将二楼原有的吧台拆除，让空间进一步扩大，变成了一个享有私密空间的宴会厅。更改后的布局更加灵活，可容纳超过180人的会议。空间以灰色为基调，并利用墙面、窗帘、地毯的亮度差异营造出层次感。受纽约艺术家 Jacob Hashimoto的启发，图案由冷灰色和蓝色圆形拼贴而成。

In order to create a tailored space for private events, JBI removed a permanent bar and expanded the usable footprint to make the space more flexible. The new banquet room is able to host events with more than 180 people.Decorating with gray tones, the wall finish, curtains and carpet create multiple layers of differing brightness. Custom-designed Shaw carpets feature patterns loosely inspired by the work of New York artist Jacob Hashimoto, with circles and oval geometries repeated in cool greys and blues.

Artist David Higginbotham introduces hand-applied graphite finishes (similar to “Impasto”– a painting technique that layers paint very thick on canvas) across the dining room walls and columns. New sheer drapery and blackout shades were installed to support audio/visual presentations. Multiple ‘starburst’ chandeliers evoke the classic light fixtures at the Metropolitan Opera.

The stunning view, simple lines, open space and pure color create an intimate and graceful art-filled ambience.JBI master planned the renovation of the large stepped terraces that cascade down to Washington Harbor, connecting the restaurant with the surroundings.Belgian artist Arne Quinze created a 40-foot-tall metal sculpture entitled ‘Natural Chaos,’for the terrace.

JBI also designed an expansive new outdoor bar with wood grain porcelain tile and a deep green fabric awning, which divided the outdoor space and helped define Sequoia’s identity.The rustic and concise design leaves a cool and relaxed impression with the customers.

艺术馆给人的印象常常是严肃、静谧和抽离的。餐厅却恰恰相反，温馨、惬意，让人沉浸其中。设计师通过主从关系的把握，这两个冲突的气质，在Sequoia巧妙地融,焕发出独特的魅力和色彩。

Art galleries always come across as serious, quiet and detached, while restaurants are always at the opposite side, feeling warm, intimate, and immersive. By balancing the role of art gallery and restaurant, Sequoia perfectly blends both characteristics together to create a unique restaurant destination with a charming personality.
