竞赛背景

第三界文化项目“再用意大利”推动了一场有关“坠落教堂再利用”的国际建筑竞赛。这是一个在意大利南部小镇格罗托莱（马泰拉）的被遗忘的教堂（意大利语为“ Chiesa Diruta”）。本次竞赛与当地组织一起应对遗弃的意大利小镇问题，其中首要代表是Wonder Grottole (www.wondergrottole.it).

The third edition of the cultural project Re-use Italy promotes an international architecture competition on the reuse of the “Fallen-church” (“Chiesa Diruta” in Italian), a forgotten church in southern Italy, Grottole (Matera), and faces the issue of the abandonment of small towns in Italy, together with local organizations, among which Wonder Grottole on the front line (www.wondergrottole.it).

The contest is organized in partnership with, ArchDaily, KooZA/rch, Graphisoft, Wonder Grottole, and with the official support of the Municipality of Grottole (Matera), Ministero per i beni e le attività culturali e per il turismo, FAI Basilicata, Matera Art Film Festival, ANCI Basilicata, Associazione Borghi Autentici d’Italia, Ordine degli Architetti P.P.C. della provincia di Matera.

Chiesa Diruta is a catholic church built in Grottole (MT) in the 15th century, in order to host the local community of clergymen and to become one the most important churches of the bishopric. It suffered a lot of damages due to earthquakes, fires and building issues so it was soon abandoned.

The competition, open to architects, engineers and students, asks the participants to transform the ruin into a Concert Hall.

The deadline is March 12th. It’s requested one A1 sheet (59cmx84cm). The total prizes are 4000 Euro. The submitted projects will be displayed on an exhibition on April 2021 in Grottole, and the winners, in addition to receiving a prize, will be invited to explain their project to the citizenry.

INTRODUCTION

It suffered a lot of damages due to earthquakes, fires and building issues so it was soon abandoned. Participants of this competitions are asked to reuse this space as a Concert Hall.

Is it possible to bring life back inside one of the most important religious buildings of Southern Italy? The answer to this question is in the hands of the architects, the engineers and the students who will participate to this competition.

GOALS

Rethinking Chiesa Diruta means to approach an unfinished work, which is able to reactivate the emotions of the town and mobilize a heritage made of memories.

A cultural production center is the chance to refurbish the historical city center, largely abandoned, creating a meeting point for citizens and an attractive epicentre for visitors and artist from all over the world. Working on an historical architecture means to research, to learn, to experiment on matter and on time, projecting an ancient architecture to a contemporary world and function. This contest is the occasion to turn on visions about the use of space, but also to create networks and relationships which will last longer. The involvement of citizens, motivated through interviews and creative sessions during the first phases of the project, stimulates the community to imagination and experimentation; it pushes the public organizations to dialogue and it draws —mostly not on purpose— possible management strategies.

HISTORY

The first certain information date back to 1508, when a preexisting parish church was turned into the new Church of St. Luca and St. Giuliano, and a community of clergymen established there. During the Sixteenth and Seventeenth century many interventions modified the aspect of the church, with the addiction of altars and decorations. At the end of the Seventeenth century an earthquake seriously damaged the church, that gradually collapsed during the following decades. At the beginning of the Nineteenth century the church was completely abandoned and it started to be named after the vernacular expression ‘Chiesa Diruta’(The Fallen-church). In 1985 other collapses took place and the following years many restoration works were carried out to preserve the church, but nothing was made to reuse it.

PROGRAM

– The participant must conceive the entire church as a new concert hall, a space dedicated to theatrical and music events
– The participant must design an (or multiple) auditorium space, adapt for lectures, meetings, concerts, films, performance art. This space must be usable both in winter and in summer. Please, consider no less than 1,3 square meters per person in the audience
– The participant must design a stage space (no less than 5 people at the same time) and a backstage space
– The participant must design a few dressing rooms
– The participant must design a small gift-shop point
– The participant must design a small area for a bar dedicated to the audience
– The participant must design a reception/box office space
– The participant must design the following additional spaces: a storage spaces, restrooms for the audience and for the musicians, an office for the administration (1 person)
– The participant must conceive a project that yields the perception of the church space at diverse elevations.

PRIZES

Jury members will assign 3 awards, 10 honorable mentions and an undefined number of special mentions for innovative proposals, which will all be exposed during the competition exhibition. The winning proposal will be acquired by the municipality of the town, in order to find funds.
First Prize: 2500 EUR
Second Prize: 1000 EUR
Third Prize: 500 EUR

EXHIBITION

Winners, honorable mentions, and other selected projects will be shown during an Exhibition in Chiesa Diruta, Grottole (MT), mid-April 2021 (exact dates are not yet selected).

PUBLICATION

All the winning design entries will be published on the website www.reuseitaly.com and ArchDaily.

The organization will make an effort to give the maximum visibility on web and paper magazines to winning projects and honorable mentions. However, the actual publication abides exclusively in the relationship between Re-use Italy and editors.

All deadlines are meant to be at 23.59 (GMT +1; Rome) of the prescribed day.

REGISTRATION

This ideas competition is open to anyone from worldwide older than 18 years. It’s up on participants if competing alone or group in teams of maximum 4 people. For teams, the registration fee refers to the total amount of the team. People with professionals or parental relationships with jury members and people involved in the competition organization are not allowed to participate, not individually neither as a team.
