Appreciations towards Wanghe Studio for providing the following description:

Paper Possible is one of the material-research projects by Wanghe Studio, through which the designer intends to extend wastepaper into product based on its type. The project speculates an alternative for paper-recycling practice in the nearly future. The collection includes three objects – a megaphone made from waste leaflets; a series of pencils made of discarded newspaper and a paper-cup phone turned from missing letters. Three typical type of paper were selected (leaflet – business promotion, newspaper – public affairs, letter – private messages) addressing the great possibility and potential of this topic.

Leaflet megaphone

According to data, paper recycling rate in Newham (located in East London) ranks bottom among all the districts in London 2017. In the first object I turned a great amount of leaflets collected in Newham into a megaphone for local street cleaner to address this environmental crisis. Here leaflet, a promotional type of paper is extended into a voice amplifier.

The texture depends on leaflets used during the making process, while the scattered leaflets imply various information.

The handle part is made of leather and brass hinge. By adding luxuri- ous details the criticality of the object is highlighted.

Newspaper pencil

More than thousand newspapers are failed to be recycled in London underground everyday. Through the second object, I transformed discarding newspapers into a series of pencils. Here newspaper, a paper carries public news is turned into a primary tool for creating news. The lead and prints on the pencil reflects different form of ink.

The messages left during production process becomes a special texture, which makes each pencil unique in stories.

Letter phone

In the UK, it said that more than million letters are missing annually due to the unclear addresses. These letters are transported into a “dead-letter office” located in the north part of England. In the third object, I extend missing letters into a phone. Here letters, a private type of paper is turned into a tool for sharing secrets.

The white part suggests private messages, while the coloured texture is up to letters used during making process.

Different messages in the letter make a special texture of the object.
