The master plan of Hangmei International Smart Town is to build a “Town with Heart” with the power to attract and retain talents, which can evolve into a new science and technology town of enduring development.The planned “Heart of the Town” in the project shows infinite vitality. Blocks, 80 meters square, are dotted in both “Old Town” and “New Town”. With crosswalks of comfortable sizes, low-density blocks and courtyards and squares rich in details, it will be an ideal place for talents in science and technology to pursue their career.Lying at its Northeast corner is the demo zone which has been launched into the market prior to the rest of the town. The demo zone consists of two parts—the Block Zone composed of New Town office building, Old Town office buildings and Art Center, and “College”, a section encompassing sales centers and information display centers.

“新城”办公楼|“New Town” office building
“New Town” office building is tailored to the needs of the 1st batch of enterprises moved into the town. The main office areas are on the south side. In the middle part of south facade, balconies, one at each floor, are arranged in the shape of a ladder, which looks like “the Lane in the Air”, and they offer communication spaces for workers. Vertical grilles used can give people a sense of rhythm, which represents the spirit of space intention pursued by oriental architects.

The North side features service office space. Facades here are typically constructed with fair-faced concrete. Natural joints formed from concrete pouring and visible joints, from which one can get the storey height, give the façade more details.Great efforts have been made to build this part into an office building cluster characterized by reasonable dimensions, plain building materials and carefully-designed details, a suitable place for enterprises to handle office work.

“老城”办公楼|“Old Town” office building
“Old Town” office buildings, made mainly of facing bricks with textures similar to those of shale bricks, look plain but convey solemnity, demonstrating the feature of traditional Chinese culture. With sloping roofs processed in an abstract way, these buildings combine modern architectural styles with traditional Chinese culture.

To let more light in, glass French windows are main elements of the ground floor, and on this floor, public commercial services are delivered. Bricks are the major building materials for floors from the 2nd to the 4th. People can directly get the layout of the whole building from its façade where solid and void intermingle.

In order to avoid the block of views among buildings, façades facing inner streets are installed with rectangular windows whose sizes and positions vary according to interior floor heights and users’ visual feels. Facades facing outer streets adopt large-area glass curtains, which ensures both wide vision and adequate lighting.

艺术中心|the Art Center
In order to make the Block Zone’s space more diversified, the Art Center is elevated above the ground which is accessible via stairs. By doing so, a semi-open space supported by columns is formed, and with the ground floor below the earth’s surface, this space has been used as a semi-exterior playground.

Fair-faced concrete is used as the main building materials for the 1st floor of the Art Center. The 2nd and 3rd floors are built with expanded metal mesh, which gives a sense of lightness. The 2nd floor is mainly used for exhibition and presentation, and it takes the shape of a hollow square, centering around the courtyard for getting natural lights. With a balcony, the 2nd floor allows for semi-outer exhibitions, and it is the best place for visitors to exchange views on exhibitions and to feel the changing between lights and shadows of the courtyard. On the 3rd floor, there are office rooms and book stores. Its overall layout is the same as the 2nd floor. The courtyard not only enlarges its daylighting area but also facilitate ventilation.

The central axis of the semi-exterior playground passes through the Art Center’s main entrance gate through which one can get to the center via stairs. The space under the stairs and the adjoining west part form a service area. With courtyard façade made out of fair-faced concrete, along with fair-faced concrete stairs and columns, the main entrance gate and courtyard look concise and powerful in the style.

信息展示中心|Information Display Center
“College” consists of a Sales Center and an Information Display Center where a picture of how people in Smart Town work and live can be got. In traditional Chinese culture, “College” is the place for writing books, putting forward ideas and theories and teaching. From the perspective of the modern culture, the place represents a smart town where thoughts and creative ideas are pooled to advance the development of science and technology.

Visitors can walk through courtyards and blocks formed by the multi-story buildings to see the exhibitions while exchanging their views, feeling the elegance and comfort the space offers.

Information Display Center takes the shape of giving a hug, gazing over the river at the Sales Center. The 1st floor focuses on daylighting, and the 2nd floor is covered with lightweight metal meshes, part of which can be opened. With holes to get the daylighting, the façade shows colorful details and changes, giving a stereoscopic and layering impression.

Sales Center is divided into two parts respectively used for exhibition and office work, and the two parts are linked through a South-North corridor. Made of lightweight white and transparent glass, the exhibition area, with the waterscape serving as a foil, exudes tranquility and purity. Contrasting with the exhibition area, the office area highlights the perception of solidity.
