Following a concept born from the mix of preserving, modifying and adding, a historical grain silo is integrated into the new museum complex. Newly added volumes give distinctive character to the two side of the lengthy silo building.

A rectangular‘artcube’is featured on the waterside, pushing itself into the water as a visual attraction. It accentuates the point where the waterfront promenade changes from the cultural axis with performance art center and museum to a calmer residential neighborhood.

On the landside a lengthy extension of the silo serves as a backbone for the new plaza, that spans between silo, new building and canal.

The existing silo is transformed through cutting a curved shape out of it, achieving both the goal of creating a sheltered forum for visitors, as well as revealing the inner beauty of the building.

From there the visitor follows the former way of the grain: The exhibition loop starts on the top of the building and gradually makes its way downwards, via detour of the new appendix on the eastern side, that is – in stark contrast to the the closed, curved concrete silo – executed as an open box wrapped in industrial glass.

The main focal point from afar will be the‘artcube’, that stands as a landmark separated from the coastline.

It is composed of two elements, its backbone is the counter shape of the cutout of the silo, housing smaller stages, a cafe and restaurant, as well as a lookout platform. Its skin is executed as a media facade, either appearing translucent as to catch the shadow of its interior, or displaying selected artworks from the Norge Tangen Collection, to conclude the step from ‘private collection’to ‘public art’.
