DESCRIPTION:

The project tries to sculpt a floating, flying and dynamic image of “Shanghai opera sleeves” along Huangpu River from the inspiration of the key elements – “water sleeves” and “hundred-pleated-skirt”. The continuous curvy shape is formed based on the requirement of functions and the distortion, extension, rotation, and fold of mass, it then opens to the massive landscape of Huangpu River, and eventually, it becomes a contemporary, ingenious, and special architectural form that harmonize with the surrounding environment.
The project emphasizes the relationship between vernacular urban condition and the extruded port landscape, and the layout of functional division based on attribution and heiarchy. The overhead public hall is opened to the river and Houtan Ecological Park, the back of house and management service are located on the east side, two theatres are placed in-between for the fulfillment of efficiency and clear circulation. Besides, the water pavilion, connecting ancient opera stage and amphitheatre is placed at the very centre of divisions, not only serves as an organic divider for each parts, but also creates an inside landscape space of multiple layers.
The project also thinks about the convenience of public flow, communication and interaction of public culture, business opportunities. It scours out a self-independent overhanging space that connects the square/plaza on the outside, sunken patio, and inner water pavilion, and extends freely to the public urban landscape. Simultaneously, the project introduces a dynamic and three dimensional landform into the site, to make it a “park space” that carries potential interactivities. Beyond this, it provides cultural and commercial atmosphere where necessary.
The curvy shape also creates artistic interior space. Public hall opens to Houtan Park and water landscape, and unfolds to the water pavilion. To the outside, it gives a massive urban landscape, to the inside, it rather provides a different taste of tradition and intimacy. The traditional skin and green curtain wall design provides changeable light and shade.
The project also includes concepts of low-carbon energy saving strategies and technologies based on local conditions.
All in all, this project is based on an ideology of “Culture, Art, and Life”, it contains both contemporary image and traditional-local elements. It has the ambition of becoming the new name card of the city of Shanghai, a new landmark on Huangpu River, a palace for artists, a public space for everyone’s participation in culture and exhibition.
