Appreciation towards MRDA for providing the following description:

2015 年 7 月在新疆阿勒泰地区发改委的主持下，MRDA建筑事务所在与中国三家大型甲级设计院的角逐中胜出，赢得阿勒泰机场扩建工程新航站楼建筑方案的设计资格。项目位于自然环境得天独厚的新疆阿勒泰地区，MRDA设计的阿勒泰机场新航站楼旨在创造一个融合地域文化特点，促进地区经济发展的标志性门户建筑。

In July 2015, under the auspices of the Xinjiang Altay Development and Reform Commission, MRDA outcompeted three major Class A design institutes in China and won the design of the new terminal building program for the Altay airport expansion project. The project is located in the Altay enjoying unique and advantaged environment. The new terminal designed by MRDA is aimed to create a landmark portal for the integration of both regional cultural characteristics and the promotion of regional economic development.

西班牙古根海姆博物馆的建成，前往游客的消费为当地带来了2.11亿欧元的GDP上涨，4232个就业岗位增幅的连锁反应，由此诞生了建筑影响城市经济，实现持续发展的著名建筑学典范。毕尔巴鄂效应理论对中国城市化进程的可适用性与本土化影响，亦是MRDA通过此次阿勒泰机场的设计实践，来验证建筑理论地域差异性的目的之一。

With the completion of Spanish Guggenheim Museum, the consumption of tourists created 211 million euros for the local GDP and 4232 jobs as well, which gave birth to the famous architectural paragon, Bilbao theory, which means architecture is able to stimulate local economy so as to realize sustainable development. It’s also the intention of MRDA who wants to apply Bilbao effect to the process of China’s urbanization and architectural localization.

新疆阿勒泰地区地处亚洲大陆腹地，地貌特征丰富，南北气候差异较大。由此催生出的阿勒泰地区的自然生态景观，带有强烈的地域属性，随着时间线的拉伸，原生态地折射出明显的季节、地貌、色彩的变化。多层次、多维度的自然无序组合，带有很大程度的随机性，塑造出了阿勒泰得天独厚的地域自然景观优势。

MRDA源于对当地自然环境的深入思考，希望建筑能作为时间的客厅，成为承载当地季节风景变化的容器。简洁流动的线条，银白色的建筑体量，最直接的玻璃面反射环境。冬季时，建筑与雪景融为一体，浑然天成；夏季时，建筑在五颜六色的环境中脱颖而出，犹如大自然中一颗璀璨的宝石。

Xinjiang Altay is located in the hinterland of the Asian continent possessing diverse terrain features and north-south climate differences. Thus the natural ecological landscape of the Altay region has strong geographical attributes, which reflects obvious changes of season, landform, color spontaneously, with the flow of timeline. Multi-level, multi-dimensional disorderly but naturally combination, with a large degree of randomness, creates unique landscape advantages for Altay.

Derived from the deep understanding of local natural environment, MRDA employs simple flowing lines, silver and white building volume, the most direct glass surface reflecting surroundings to create this landmark. As a result, the building and snow blend into an integrity in winter; in summer, it’s distinguished from the colorful environment and glitterslike a gem.

阿勒泰地处中国新疆北部边境地区，西北与哈萨克斯坦、俄罗斯相连，东北与蒙古国接壤。塞种、匈奴、鲜卑、柔然、突厥、蒙古、哈萨克等多个游牧民族自古于此繁衍生息，民族文化在历史的进程中于此碰撞交汇，相互渗透与同化，缔造了根植于地域中深厚而广阔的文化基因。

在新疆，哈萨克族对白天鹅崇拜至甚，哈萨克一词便是白天鹅的意思。机场立面设计一方面基于类型学设计，从白天鹅双翼的形体上进行提炼简化，由抽象推及具体；另一方面则受启于阿勒泰地区民族舞者的优美舞姿，通过建筑学表现灵动而充满生机的地域人文精神。

Altay is located in the northern border area of Xinjiang Province in China. It is connected to Kazakhstan and Russia in the northwest and bordered by Mongolia in northeast. Many nomads such as a plug, the Huns, Xianbei, ROEN, Turks, Mongolia and Kazakhstan have lived and multiplied here since ancient times. National culture collision and integration occurred in the course of history were accompanied by mutual penetration and assimilation, creating a distinctively cultural gene rooting in the region deeply.

In Xinjiang, Kazakhs worship the white swan to the most. The word Kazakh means white swan. On the one hand, airport facade design is based on the typological design, which was simplified and refined from the white swan wings, namely, from the abstract to specific; on the other hand, the design is inspired by beautiful dancing demonstrated by local dancers in Altay, which illustrates brightness and vitality of regional humanistic spirit through the architectural language.

项目基地四周遍布着极具代表性的地域生态景观带，植被种类层次多样而又富于季节性变化，完整纯粹的建筑体型设计，可以最大限度地避免置入除自然元素之外的多余变量。兼具立体感和力量感的几何单元组合成为建筑主体，玻璃幕墙穿插于银白色单元中，起到映射和透视周边景观元素的框景作用，虚实并置，相辅相成，简洁优雅的主体单元将建筑塑造为升腾而起的大地雕塑，而框景玻璃则将庞大的雕塑消隐融汇于自然景观之中，显著而又得体。

The site is surrounded by extremely representative regional ecological landscape belt including a variety of vegetation species and rich seasonal diversification. Therefore, a complete pure building volume design should be the best solution to avoid the extra variables imbedding into natural elements to the maximum extent. The main building is consisted of geometric elements reflecting the sense of three-dimensional and strength. The glass curtain wall interspersed in the silver-white unit, plays a role in framing the mapping and perspective of the surrounding landscape elements. The simple and elegant main unit looks like a huge sculpture rising from earth; the framed glass blends the huge sculpture with natural landscape obviously and decently.

建筑内部设计是建筑外部特质的延续与升华。主入口大厅为对称式布局，规整大气而不失优雅。屋顶天窗均匀布置于结构单元之间，既为航站楼室内提供了充足的自然光，也是对立面肌理的延续。置身其中，如临自然，四周地域生态景观尽收眼底，凌霄其上的天空也随着天光一同映射下来，光影纵横，斗转星移间衬托出建筑的灵动。

Interior design is the extension and sublimation of external characteristics. The main entrance hall employs symmetrical layout, looking ordered and elegant. Roof skylights are evenly arranged between the structural units bringing inside sufficient sunlight. Moreover, this arrangement is also the extension of facade structure. When standing inside, you will feel like being exposed to the nature, surrounded by ecological landscape panoramic view.

客流交通组织采用高效便捷的上下分层体系，出发旅客通过垂直交通体系上至二层，进行分流;到达旅客则先至二层，再通过垂直交通系统，到达一层，分流离开机场。同时票务办理区域紧邻安检区，以最大限度节省旅客办理手续的时间。

The traffic organization applies efficient and convenient upper and lower hierarchical system. Passengers can go to the second floor through the vertical traffic system and distinguished; arrival passengers reach the second floor firstly, and then through the vertical traffic system reach the first floor, diverted and leave the airport. At the same time the ticket management area is close to the security area in order to increase efficiency for boarding passengers.

MRDA在此次阿勒泰机场设计中充分考虑了建筑的可变性与可适应性，为机场未来的国际化发展预留了可能。西侧的候机厅前期服务于国内航班，随着社会经济发展不断推进，后期可规划服务于国际航班，以满足当地日益增长的发展需求。

MRDA considered the building’s variability and adaptability in the future. Extra space has already been set aside for the possibility of future expansion. The terminal on the west side is planned to serve domestic flights. With the increase of passenger volume, the east side is planned to serve international flights.

建筑结构柱体上阔下窄，由上至下沿悬挑曲线逐渐收分，两个结构柱体依曲面相向而置，形成升腾而起的“券拱”之势，共同组成健硕有力的结构单元支撑主体;桁架结构横跨其间，暴露而出，整齐划一地阵列分布，展现出严谨的结构美学，同时结合通透性的天窗设计，以轻盈灵动的设计语言昭示出结构单元的建构逻辑。

结构受力方面，宽大的结构柱上端可以增大柱帽与结构连接体的接触面积，以便更好地承受上部结构体传来的荷载，而不至于局部压强太大;缩小的柱脚则是为了满足造型需求以及获得更大的使用面积。

立面幕墙可采用三层双腔玻璃或者双层三银玻璃，以应对阿勒泰地区冬季寒冷气候，除隔热保温的作用外，又能最大限度的将自然光引入室内。

The building structure column is wide on the top but narrow at bottom, creating a cantilevered curve. The surface structure in opposite formation rises “arch” trend constituting the structural unit of powerful supporting body; truss structure is exposed out of uniform distribution in neat array to show the structure aesthetic.

In the aspect of structural stress, the contact area of the upper structure column can increase the column cap and loose structure, in order to better withstand the load of upper structure came. The narrowing of the column feet is intended to reach more beautiful body and improve space utilization.

In order to cope with the cold climate in winter of Altay, the facade curtain wall is made of three layers of double cavity glass or double layer three silver glass, which also insulates heat in summer. Besides, it maximizes the introduction of natural light into the inner space.
