During the 00’ies the renowned German engineering company, Siemens, decided they needed to modernize their Head office in ballerup outside copenhagen. initially the plan was to refurbish the existing office building, but the project came out too expensive and the company soon turned to plan b, an entirely new building. So in 2014 the new Siemens Head office was inaugurated with all the latest Siemens technology, making the building a living showcase for
the company. The large atrium ridgelight solution consists of six rows of VELUX modular Skylights which ensures substantial amounts of daylight resulting in a bright and pleasant space.

丹麦西门子传媒总监John Finnich Pedersen表示，因西门子一直致力于可持续能源解决方案，所以新总部将所有最新的西门子技术集于一身，并在设计之初就考虑如何降低及减少能源的使用，将更多的阳光引入办公空间，同时做到光热可控，从而为员工带来更健康舒适的办公环境。这栋新办公楼完全满足了现代建筑的全部要求，因而也成为西门子集团内部的指路明灯。最终西门子总部获得了LEED认证的“金级”奖。
“It’s more like a mind-set”, explains Siemens danish director of communication, John Finnich pedersen. “We want to be as energy efficient as possible in the way we work.”John Finnich pedersen is proud of the way the new Siemens Head office has accumulated all the latest Siemens technology in one single building, but also how the strive for sustainable energy solutions has made this facility a kind of beacon within the company. “Our building is only one of a few that are LEEd certified. We have achieved the second highest rating, which is called ‘gold’. it supports the entire idea, that we should use as little energy as possible in our building. With this new office facility Siemens has fulfilled all its demands in terms of how a modern building should work.”

Documenting the daylight effect helped Siemens achieve LEEd certification
LEEd stands for Leadership in Environmental and Energy design. According to Lone Feifer, the leading expert at the VELUX Group on sustainable living in buildings, the American certification system can be a great asset, when planning a new building design. “Generally it’s a way to ensure the quality of the building. The certification is based on five categories, which is about location, water consumption, energy consumption, materials and resources as well as the indoor climate. The system forces the builder and the architect to think more widely, since the sustainability is being assessed on a bigger scale”, says Lone Feifer.

One of these parameters involves the volume of daylight in the building. it is difficult to predict the lighting effect in advance, however the VELUX Group has a tool that will do just that. “VELUX modular Skylights can help achieve the goals and support a certification. To help document the effect, we have developed a number of VELUX building Simulation Tools, which can be used to simulate the impact of VELUX modular Skylights. it’s important, because it is this form of simulating daylight, energy and indoor climate that in the end will document the significance of our modules.”

To determine the influx of daylight, the building design was tested in advance with VELUX daylight Visualizer. While the result helped Siemens arrange the interior, it also revealed the structure to have one of the highest daylight factors ever to be registered in a danish office building.
温度控制 Heat control

The composite material used for framing protects against cold bridging and ensures a very low U-value. The low thermal conductivity is achieved, using a mold of pultruded fiberglass and polyurethane. The protection against cold bridging is a defining quality of the product and was one of the important reasons for choosing VELUX modular Skylights in ballerup.

建筑大中庭 | A plaza with no cold-bridges
在追求卓越能源效率之后，紧接着的是对充足光线的需求。这是一栋内庭式建筑，通常情况下，内朝向空间受到的日照总是少于外朝向空间，因此需要计算并测试内部中庭的日光照射量。该项目最终采用了228 樘威卢克斯VMS商用天窗，建造了一个拥有充足阳光和可直接仰视天空的特色室内广场。项目经理Palle Thusholt介绍道：“我们选择威卢克斯与诺曼福斯特事务所共同研发的VMS模块化天窗系统，是因为他们的产品非常激动人心。产品冷桥热量流失极少，冷桥保温处理得相当不错，远胜其它产品。最重要的是，它具有非常前瞻的能源特性。”
The pursuit of superior energy efficiency was followed by a demand for plenty of daylight. Siemens always wanted their building to be as bright as possible, and according to project manager palle Thusholt from kpc københavn A/S that meant a lot of testing and simulation. “It’s an atrium-house, and those spaces, which face towards the centre, will always have less daylight than those, facing outward. That is why calculations were carried out to test the amount of daylight coming in”, he says.
in the end no less than 228 VELUX modular Skylights were included in the project, creating a proper indoor plaza with plenty of sunlight and a direct view to the sky above. The reason VELUX modular Skylights was chosen for this project, explains palle Thusholt, was not only that it represented something new and inspiring. First of all it had some very promising energy properties. “We chose VELUX, because they came with an exciting product. it was newly developed and had very little cold bridging. The insulation against cold bridging looked to be reasonably good and came out better than its competitors.”

no one is closer to the operating status of this building than project manager michael Gøtz of Siemens real-Estate. during construction he supervised the implementation of all the latest technology into the building, including Siemens own Green building monitor system, which visualizes how the building saves energy. “With this system, we can monitor all resources in the building, and how they are consumed. if the water consumption goes up, the system will tell us exactly how much and where it happens. And we can act on it”, he explains. The VELUX modular Skylights are controlled by a Windowmaster® system and are not a part of the monitoring system, however as michael Gøtz underlines, the skylights are very much a part of the overall concept. “Daylight is a central part of being LEEd-certified. in the same way as we use our Green building monitor system to document the results, the skylights are there to make the building pleasant and sustainable. it tells us that it is possible to design a bright building and remain sustainable at the same time.”
The white colour ensures plenty of daylight and optimal heat protection
228樘威卢克斯VMS商用天窗都配有一体化集成的白色遮阳帘，相比于深色面料，白色遮阳帘透光率更高，当天窗遮阳帘关闭时不仅能防止眩光，还保持了良好的天窗采光效果。遮阳帘的主要目的是保护西门子总部避免受到过多来自太阳的辐射热，尤其是在夏季，这么大尺度的建筑中庭，暴露在阳光的炙烤之下，如果没有遮阳帘，就会有大量的辐射热传递进来。白色，是遮阳帘的理想颜色，因为该颜色能更有效地反射太阳热能。用术语来说，相对于黑色和灰色0.15的太阳得热因子（g 值），白色遮阳帘的g 值只有 0.13。当然，冬天时的作用正好相反。在白天，西门子总部的中庭天窗必然会成为一个非常有用的加热“装置”，可提供免费的太阳能来给建筑升温，同时降低能源消费总量。
All 228 VELUX modular Skylights are fitted with fully integrated, white roller blinds. contrary to darker fabrics, white blinds has a much higher light transmittance, providing more daylight to the interior even when the blinds are closed. in other words, the blinds will protect against glare, but not inhibit the lighting effect of the skylights. The main purpose of the blinds at Siemens Head office is to protect against excessive heating from the sun. Especially in the summertime the large atrium would be exposed due to the shear size of the solution. The white blinds are the optimal choice for heat protection, since the colour reflects solar energy more efficiently. in technical terms the Solar Energy Transmittance (g-value) of white roller blinds are only 0.13 compared to 0.15 for black and grey. Of course when the winter sets in the opposite is true. The large skylight at Siemens Head office will certainly become a very useful heating “apparatus” during the day, providing free solar heat to the building while lowering the total energy consumption.
