玉田城中村
Yutian Urban Village

这个故事开始于2018年底在深圳玉田村的社区营造项目，我们用直径33厘米的钢管设计了五个由腿和躯干组成的可爱动物坐凳，它们被命名为“捉迷藏”，安置在玉田城中村里的几处地方，让城市散步变得有趣。

这些坐凳曲线柔和，躯干粗短，让人想拥抱或跨坐。深浅两种绿色给人一种生命力的同时，色彩拼接的形式进一步强调了坐凳的独特造型。它们在形状和颜色上都采用了抽象的设计，因此它们看起来像是不能被完全理解的东西，需要人们通过自由想象和创造性的思维来解释。人们使用坐凳的场景看起来就像街头的即兴表演，也给观众带来了愉快的时刻。

以社区营造为目的，这些坐凳作为景观家具，不仅仅用于玩耍休憩，更是用于创造交流空间。旨在扩大使用者的视野，同时与大家分享幽默的设计。

The beginning of the whole story is the project of community-building in Yutian urban village in Shenzhen, which started around the end of 2018. We designed five adorable animal-like benches consisting of legs and torso using steel pipes with a diameter of 33 cm, and they were named “Hide-and-Seek” and placed in several spots in Yutian urban village. They made city walks fun.

These benches have soft curves and their torso is stubby, which makes people want to hug them and straddle them. Two colors of green are used to give a feeling of life, and their combination is devised so that the unique shape of the benches can be expressed well. They are designed with a high degree of abstraction in the shape and the color, so they appear as something you don’t exactly comprehend, and ask you to have free and creative mind to interpret them. The scenes of people using the benches look like a improvisational street dance performance, which gives the viewers an enjoyable moment.

Having the concept of community-building, these benches are not designed only for sitting and resting, but designed as communication space. It is envisioned that users will expand their sight and share this humorous design with others.

制造过程
Manufacturing Process

这是一个低成本的项目。使用的材料是市政钢制水管的现成零件，仅通过切割和焊接组装，不需要弯折或曲面的复杂工艺。此外，城中村通常都是楼栋密集，其间满是迷宫般的窄小街巷，车辆无法进入。因为缺乏现场作业空间，所有的坐凳都是在外面的工厂制作，再由工人手抱肩扛运到现场安装。

This is a low budget project. The material is ready-made parts of steel water pipes, and the benches are assembled by only cutting and welding, without the complicated process of bending. Moreover, the urban village is usually packed with building blocks and full of maze-like narrow alleys not allowing vehicles to enter the site. Because it is difficult to work on site, all the benches were assembled in a factory outside, and they were transported to the site by workers carrying them on their shoulders.

城市环境的野生
Wildness in Urban Environment

与我们通常看到的功能家具不同，这些雕塑坐凳并没有限定使用方式。它们鼓励人们自行理解和自由使用。我们用“野生”一词来描述这种情况，作为功能性和理性的反义词。这种“野生”在城市环境中带来的解放感令人着迷，就像生活在城市的人会有野餐或露营的冲动。

我们制作了一个模型，以“野生感”和“生命力”来探索空间。在这个模型中，我们有五个雕塑坐凳，动态形状的花坛，和看起来野蛮生长的植物。此外，我们置入了一个雕塑墙，它是一片像狗的形状的大景墙，提供给行人一种从大狗的肚子下和腿之间钻过去的体验。就像我们小时候读的许多故事书中想象的经历。

Unlike functional benches we see everywhere, the meaning of these sculptural benches is not developed. They allow people to have their own interpretation and use freely. We describe this condition with the word of “wild” as an antonym of functional and rational. We are fascinated by the sense of liberation that this “wildness” brings out in urban environment. It is similar to the urge that people living in the city sometimes want to go for a picnic or camping.

We made a model exploring the space with the feeling of “wild” or “life”. In this model, we have five sculptural benches, flower beds with dynamic shape, and plants looking wild. Furthermore, we proposed a sculptural wall, a large dog-like wall that creates an experience of passing under the belly and between the legs. It is those experiences that we imagined in story books from our childhood.

新沙小学

我们设计的新沙小学里有30多个雕塑坐凳，放置在校园各处，等待学生们寻找和玩耍。这些坐凳的设计有两个特点：（1）创造交流的场所；（2）学生可以发挥自己的创造性思维自由使用。坐凳的抽象满足了一个好的儿童游乐场的要求。这些景观装置使学生的日常活动更加充满精力，这也将对他们的课堂学习态度产生积极影响。开学后，它们深受学生的喜爱，成为了学校生活的一部分，表现出色。

Xinsha Primary School which we involved in the campus design has more than 30 sculptural benches placed all around the campus waiting for students to find and play with them. The design of these benches has two characteristics: (1) it is a place for communication, and (2) students use them freely with their creative mind. The abstraction of the benches meets the requirements of a good playground for children. These landscape devices raise the level of daily energy of student, it will surely have a positive impact on the students’ attitude for study in the classroom. Now that the school is open, the benches are showing a great performance loved very much by students, and have become a part of their school life.

社区营造
Community-Building

考虑到玉田项目是关于社区营造的，我们就如何让当地居民和现场的五个坐凳之间建立更牢固的关系进行了讨论，并用五个坐凳的印章策划了一个社区活动。我们总共开发了56个印章，包括雕塑坐凳，不同姿势的人、猫鸟等小动物，植被，还有一些“哟！”等字样。任何人都可以用这套印章在纸上创造自己心目中的理想空间。通过玩印章的社区活动，人们会更喜欢现场的五个坐凳，同时会有更多机会结识新朋友。

Knowing that the project in Yutian is about community-building, there was a discussion in our design team about how to make stronger relationship between local residents and five benches on the site. And we planned a community event in Yutian using stamps of the five benches. We developed 56 stamps in total, including the sculptural benches, people in different postures, small animals such as cats and birds, vegetation, and some words such as “Yo!”. They are the tool that anyone can use to create an ideal space on a paper. By playing with the stamps, people will love the five benches on the site more, and by participating the community event, the residents will have more opportunity to meet new friends.

玩空间！
Play with Space!

说到“玩空间”，有我们从小就知道的积木和乐高，此外，我们还可以考虑用纸板建造一个秘密基地，在纸上画风景，拍摄城市空间等等。我们为玉田项目开发的印章是人们可以玩耍和创造空间的好工具。这个游戏包含创作、技法、美感、展示、交流等多方面的乐趣。随着印章的不断发展，我们研发了名为“社区印造/STAMPARK”的文创产品，从2021年12月起公开发行。

Speaking of “play that deals with space”, there are toy-blocks and LEGO that we all know from our childhood. Furthermore, we could think of building a secret base with cardboard, painting a landscape on paper, photographing an urban space, and so on. The stamps that we developed for Yutian are a good tool that people can play with and create spaces. This play involves fun about creation, technique, beauty, exhibition, communication, and so on. With the continuous development of the stamps, we made the product named “STAMPARK”, which is accessible to everyone from December 2021.

尝试：活动的坐凳
Trial: Movable Stool

玉田的坐凳是固定的，而“社区印造/STAMPARK”的坐凳可以在纸上移动，让玩家可以创造出任何理想的空间构图。受“社区印造/STAMPARK”的启发，我们通过在腿上安装轮子制作了一个可移动的凳子，试图实现“有生命力的空间”的想法。与玉田坐凳的概念相同，我们使用现成的钢管进行切割和焊接的简单加工。凳子粗短的腿，柔和的曲线，幽默的造型，看起来就像一只可爱的小动物在地上爬来爬去。试想如果我们将多个凳子放在一个社区空间中会更有趣。

The benches in Yutian are fixed in the place, while the benches in STAMPARK are movable on a paper, allowing players to create any ideal spatial compositions. Having a hint from STAMPARK, we made a movable stool by installing wheels on the legs, trying to realize the idea of “Life in Urban Space”. With the same concept as the benches in Yutian, we used ready-made steel pipes with the limited processing of cutting and welding. The stool has stubby legs, soft curves, and a humorous shape, so that, it looks like an adorable small animal crawling on the ground. As an experiment, it would be more interesting if we placed multiple stools together in a community space.

生命力的空间
Life in Urban Space

城市是我们生活的基础。通过设计充满鲜花和绿植的景观，并布置公共艺术装置，能为城市空间带来生机和活力。城市空间在满足功能性和合理性的同时，还应更加多元化；散步会让这座城市充满乐趣。我们认为城市家具设计的进一步发展，是使城市空间变得丰富的途径之一。城市家具的一个优点是它接近人的尺度，能创造出给使用者活动和交流互动的空间。

City is a foundation of our lives. By designing landscapes full of flowers and greenery and installing public art, we can bring out the sense of life in urban space. While the urban space is required to be functional and rational, it should also have spatial richness in various ways; It will make the city fun to walk around. We think urban furniture is one possible design field that can be further developed. A good thing about urban furniture is that its scale is close to people and its space can deal with users’ activities.
