Why study abroad?

This idea came along with me since my last year in undergraduate school. The reason is simple: going to United States for graduate school, enriching my life and knowledge.

Is there anything happened impressed you ?

The critical influence for studying and working abroad is widening experience. From graduate school to work, the way people think and do subtly exert a certain influence on me. It broadens my knowledge to the world, fosters a better attitude to life and study, and elevates the professional level. The more I experience, the deeper I dig into myself. Then I realize the tenuity of what I know and pinpoint myself to doing something substantial.

What do you miss about China?

Family; friends; the vision to the China’s future.

Will you come back? Why?

I do. For now and the next years, I tend to collect experience in the United States before I’m prepared.

Is it more distinct to view China in a different environment after going aboard? Any thought?

After obtaining more than three years of working experience and awareness of China’s situation, I went to graduate school with a preliminary study plan. When I look back at China, I gained different angles of view. Compared to the mature market situation in the U.S.A, China owns complexity on its own architecture market, which also means more opportunities and potentials.

Can you discuss the pedagogical characteristics of the schools you attended?

If we just choose one as feature, I would say – Diversification. No matter the school provided curriculums or the studios in the end, they show a great vibrant diversity that I think it’s perfect for people who has specific goals or people who don’t.

Can you discuss the characteristics of the company you attended?

The culture and professional sprits behind its name (BIG). One of the distinct reasons is that partners and most of staff are in young ages and hold a high sensibility to contemporary culture and popular elements. Hence, they allow the existence of unconventional thoughts and ideas. The leaders, especially Bjarke, were born with a passion to work and positive influence on people. These are concentration on reviewing projects, encouragement of unordinary thinking, straightforward efficiency, compelling presentation, etc. Even though a huge amount of work and high quality are needed, the working environment is basically full of energy and freedom, which wouldn’t impede the proceeding of job. In most of time, people are easier to get along with under pleasing circumstances, as well as schedule can move steadily and readily.

What is your favorite artist (in wider range such as art, music, movie )? What is the influence?

I won’t say favorite. Normally, I choose to span as far as I can to avoid indulging in one artist. Novel things around you will enlighten you in different ways. This is what I want to keep and would like to be “changed”.

What amazing character do your works have?

These projects show my recent thinking that architecture is about realizing ideal scenarios in mind. It delivers experience, behaviors, imagination, memories, etc. based on practical conditions. In the perspective of space, it emphasizes an outward sequence starting from inside. Fox example, “New York Light” is a small scale object performing as a medium for public to experience urban life. “Architecture As Mechanical Machine” considers the building performance as an active input, takes advantage of mass and machines sustainably working together to diminish dependence on mechanical system. “Materialized Intimacy” is to generate a new typology of architectural spaces by translating virtual relationships into physical behaviors, and materializing the process of building intimacy of social media. PPP Loop is to integrate three fundamental functions with an architectural language in an urban scale.

When did you start to surf on gooood? Any suggestions?

I started to follow GOOOOD when you started to post “Oversea Albums”. Today, GOOOOD has a wide range covering a variety of interesting information. I think maybe it’s a good idea if you could add a column about architectural education. Education has a vital effect on architect’s independent thinking and development which is different from what we obtain in career life. On this topic, we can talk about discrepancy of different schools, academic philosophy and so on.

New York Light

Organizer: Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership and Van Alen Institute

August 2014-December 2014
Photographs: Zhonghan Huang, Cameron Blaylock

Van Alen Institute

New York Light

“New York Light” is a small scale object performing as a medium for public to experience urban life. The Flatiron Plaza is an exception in New York. It is a unique place to take in the beauty of the city. From the plaza one can see two of New York’s great landmarks: the Flatiron and Empire State buildings. It is a spot to experience the magnificence of the urban plan – with a straight shot view of Broadway cutting diagonally through the grid.

This art installation lights up the Flatiron Plaza and pays tribute to the special urban experience from this one-of-a-kind vantage point. Designed to echo the plaza’s namesake building, the prow of structure frames the Flatiron. At the other end, the steel tube installation opens northward on Broadway and Fifth Avenue outlining a view of the Empire State.

Hundreds of mirror¬-finished panels hang from the structure so visitors standing inside can see these views surrounded by partial reflections of the immediate neighborhood. For the city that never sleeps, animated LEDs illuminate the structure at night inviting opportunities to take photos with friends or of oneself with the plaza’s urban landscape in the background.

In addition to offering passersby with these perspectives, ‘New York Light’ serves as an illuminated backdrop for events. Performers stand at the north end while the structure provides a visual buffer to traffic along 23rd St.

Architecture relies on a range of technologies to make the structures of our cities livable. In their absence, buildings would lack basic services like water and power. There would be no heating, cooling, lighting, fire safety, and elevators. In the design and engineering process the building scheme is first established, then the mechanical infrastructure is fashioned to respond to the determined massing, uses, and organization of spaces. This project, considering the building performance as an active input, takes advantage of mass and machines sustainably working together to diminish dependence on mechanical system.

The project starts from the research on thermal benefits of surface. The curved surface possesses four fundamental thermal potentials which are self-shading, light diffusing, air conducting and chimney effect. To achieve multiplied thermal potentials and attributes, single volumes of curved surface are combined regularly to formalize a larger volume with undulate surface.

MATERIALIZED INTIMACY

Studio Work at Columbia Univeristy GSAPP
Critic: Bernard Tschumi
Collaborator: Aminah Alkanderi
Fall 2013

Bernard Tschumi
合作:Aminah Alkanderi

This work explores “Notation and Concept“. The first part “Notation“ is to develop a specific mode of notation based on an existing disciplinary. The notation derives from that disciplinary will be converted into two dimensional notation and three dimensional notation step by step. I chose the battlefield map and reconfigured the two forces by building their contradicting and balancing.

The second part “Concept“ is to generate a new typology of architecture based on the outcome of “Notation”. The way I did is to generate a new typology of architectural spaces by translating virtual relationships into physical behaviors, and materializing the process of building intimacy of social media. Flatland and covert jungle are translated into open space and poche. The landscape is converted into perpendicular system where two forces as section and plan intersect each other to produce unexpected spaces. Vertical, horizontal and diagonal connections are added to respond three speeds of establishing intimacy. Intersection of contradictory interfaces results in cutaway surfaces.

PPP LOOP

Global warming keeps contributing to the rise of sea level, which incurs an irretrievable inundation of Governors Island. Meanwhile, the consciousness of sustainable energy producing for architecture which is responsible for 40% of CO2 emission becomes one of the most urgent principles for designing of future buildings.  To confront these crises in the future, a new mechanism and system should be built up. It keeps the integrity of Governor Island, protects it from being flooded, and has a self-regenerated energy system coping with the shortage of energy. Besides, it provides protest stage and accommodation in emergency for refugees in New York.

Three fundamental functions, “protecting”, “producing” and “protesting”, are integrated in a scale of urban to formalize a holistic loop to achieve a sustainable strategy. All the programs are seamlessly closed and connected as a dam to prevent inundation; refugees and protestors are able to reside inside with necessary amenities and programs; the roof is equipped with algae farm, rain collectors, and solar panels. Tidal movement is converted into electricity by vertical dam.
