The development structure of the perimeter in Zurich Hirzenbach as in Wasserfallen’s area-development plan is characterised by a peripheral garland of apartment blocks of varying heights, stepped towards each other around a middle occupied by a flat, solitaire school building. The new configurations aim to reinforce the existing urban-planning logic. The existing school building is expanded to the north by a single-storey kindergarten and to the south by a half-sunken sports hall with due consideration for the permeability of the open space and the low-rise development of the middle. By showing a typological affinity the new buildings continue to respect the existing school as the main building, whilst within their respective positions naturally re-ordering the exterior space into the functional areas of motional, play or intimate zones.

The two new buildings interlock with their encompassing space via the massive brise-soleil frames developed out of the block. In the process a spatial formulation of the structural skeleton construction of the existing school building is articulated in a functional charging: the transitional layer protects against glare in the sports hall and becomes an intimate balcony space for the kindergarten. The deep ‘frames’ serve the requirement for protection and simultaneously for the greatest possible openness, becoming both an adaptive and viewing space within the large-scale surroundings.
