Appreciation towards Studio Weave for providing the following description:

Studio Weave, in collaboration with the graphic designer Hato and illustrator Jay Cover, have been commissioned to deliver an urban landscape and pavilion for the Greenwich peninsula. The project celebrates the evolution of the area as a creative community providing new homes, jobs and neighbourhoods near the river Thames.

Positioned at the end of Phoenix Avenue, opposite Central Park, 33 is a publicly accessible pavilion that heralds the arrival of a new community on the Peninsula. Acting as the destination for visitors travelling down Phoenix Avenue, the pavilion is both a viewing platform for contemplating the construction of the neighboring Design District and an event space for a variety of activities.

The pavilion’s design evokes the idiom of a typical London terraced home. In placing the pavilion across the park from the row of remaining Georgian worker terraces on River Way, the design references the former domestic vernacular which characterised the Greenwich peninsula. The design is also invested with the personal memories of the architects at Studio Weave and their direct experience of living in typical London terraced housing.

The 3-storey fully echoes the proportions of a historical terrace dwelling, mimicking window, door and chimney segments yet introducing a contemporary twist in the form of intricately patterned stud-work.

These patterns have a structural purpose whilst also suggesting broader cultural associations – in particular questioning the meaning of ‘home’ in contemporary London.

Constructed of Douglas fir and jointed with timber pegs, the pavilion’s timber has been sustainably sourced from forests in the UK. A bright yellow steel staircase and railing wraps up the inside of the floorplate, inviting people to climb to the upper levels and view the surrounding area.

The pavilion is characterised by a bold floor graphic, coordinated by Hato and illustrated by Jay Cover, which references the bright colour palette of Phoenix Avenue. With illustrations that evoke the personal occupation of the home, extending into a 2D drawn ‘garden’, visitors can discover and take delight in everyday domestic ‘stuff’ that reveals how Londoners live today.

The installation will be open to the public Friday – Sunday throughout the year from 11am – 5pm. Entry will be managed by event staff and security with a maximum of 15 people able to access the upper floors at one time. It may also be opened for special event days programmed by the community for events such as jazz concerts, circus displays, design festivals, theatre and workshops.
