The museums of the Jyväskylä Ruusupuisto area, Alvar Aalto museum and the Museum of Central Finland, are both significant works of architect Alvar Aalto. The goal of the competition is to create a design for an extension to connect the two museums in a way that represents the high architectural level of the place. The new extension between the museums will serve as a connecting gateway between the museums, as a shared museum shop (200 m2) and as a technical space (80 m2). The extension will enable the shared use of the already existing exhibition spaces, the passenger elevator, the auditorium, the cafeteria and the workroom spaces.
On entering the new extension, you are also to enter a new world, which is connected with the in-betweens and built up in a most natural way—the concrete shear walls arraying in arch form, the fiber concrete roof hanging on parabolic curved cables, the translucent glass curtain performing a panoramic view of two-side landscape, the flowing water connecting interior and exterior interface through windows, the archipelago-like floors seeming to float on water, and after all, the sunshine lighting up all these natural artifacts.
They are singing, dancing and telling a story. The linear arraying walls are guiding you to walk between the two museums, and then the two-side views in another direction are attracting you to stay for a moment, while the water is hinting you how the landscape lies at different height. They immerse the space, perforate the air, infiltrate your body and touch your soul.
The shop is the hallway. The hallway is the shop. It is an open moving space, rather than the traditional enclosed shops. You are walking, shopping and appreciating all these gifts from our hands, and from the nature.
