Ingress: With temperatures ranging from +30oC in the summer to -30oC in the winter, this 100% mineral Living Wall had to be designed to perform year-round.
Located in Uppsala, 1h north of Stockholm, it is quite possibly Scandinavia´s most northern green-wall (latitude 59,86) and for months in the winter there are just a few hours of sun.

Many measures were taken to improve the overall impression in the cold season. Firstly, to keep maintenance costs at a minimum, typical fleece solutions were counted out as the wall must look good with or without plants. Also, any kind of plastic solution were unimaginable due to fire-hazard and microplastics that go off into aquatic systems. Butong, a high performance concrete panel, cast against Bubble-Wrap was chosen for those reasons.

The panel is translucent and can be back lit. An exterior green-wall is as much a gift to the public and the entire neighbourhood, as to the house itself. And in this case, the Vertical Garden become one focus point from the night-club/restaurant across the road, so a “bling-factor” needed to be accounted for. Back lit panels of course also add quality to the dark season when you can´t expect much Green on a wall in Sweden.

该垂直绿化墙上的植物由植物专家Peter Korn挑选，培育和种植。 在过去20年里，Peter一直在北半球采集来自不同恶劣条件下生命力顽强的植物，并研发了可用于沙、砾石、浮石基质的开拓性培育方法。 所有选定的植物都依靠根茎的蔓延而随之生长，并且至少都满足一个条件：冬季常绿或不落叶，而且能长期开花。 在一年中的9-10个月时间里，至少满足有一种植物会在墙上开花。面板呈光滑的三维型体，用来模仿群岛上的岩石。这样的面板形式也可以理解成是为了满足植物的随机生长。 尽管面板采用铜色用来与绿色植物形成鲜明对比，但是在墙壁上周期性裸露的部分看起来也很自然。
Plants were selected, nursed and planted by plant expert Peter Korn. Peter has spent the last 20 years gathering tough plants from different challenging conditions in the northern hemisphere and has developed ground-breaking methods for cultivation in sand/gravel/pumice based substrates. All selected plants spread through root-shoots, for the growth to expand naturally, and had to fulfil at least one other criteria: Being Winter-Green or having foliage that disappears in winter or having long periods of flowering . For 9-10 months/year at least one species in the wall will be flowering. Each panel has a smooth 3D shape for the wall to imitate rocks of the Archipelago. The theory being that a more nature like look create greater understanding for a more random coverage of plants. All though the red copper tint of the panels was chosen to contrast nicely with the green of the plants, the 3D aspect makes it natural enough to periodically have barren parts on the wall.

供水系统使用的是雨水，这些雨水来自相邻露台上放置的一个1.000升（250GL）的水箱。 营养品每年分几次注入，系统会避免任何营养物质进入下水道 。一个带有球形驱动泵的小水箱负责将多余的水退回到露台上的水箱中。在春季，该墙板需要每三天浇水一次，夏季和秋季一周一次，而在十一月至三月，当平均气温低于零时，注水系统则会被关闭。
The watering system make use of rain-water, with a 1.000 liter (250GL) tank placed on the adjacent terrace. Nutriments are added a few times a year to the tank and to avoid any nutriments going off into the sewers – a small tank with a ballcock driven pump, push any superfluous water back up into the tank on the terrace. Water is given every 3 days in the spring, once a week for summer and fall and is turned off when average temperature can be below 0: November to March.

The Client, Vasakronan, is Sweden´s largest developer and owned by the Swedish Pension Funds. As such, they are an important driver for more socially- and ecologically responsible projects. Perhaps they as owners do not directly benefit from the contributions to the street, but they have chosen to push development in a green direction – this being their 4th Vertical Garden in Sweden. State- and city directives are increasingly enforcing green solutions and much so for local handling of storm water. A vertical garden both take care of pollution from roofs, air and rain. From one perspective it can be seen as a very large fountain – cooling down street temperatures – which lead to less storm water over city centres in the worst downpours.

Panel or cassette based solutions have the benefit to allow more diversity, than pocket based solutions, in choosing plants, since plants can be smaller and need to cover less area. In this Vertical Garden or maybe better: Living Wall, Peter Korn has selected the plants below.
