This project was commissioned to the Taller de Arquitectura by the Société des Autoroutes de la France, which wished to build a monument on the frontier of the Catalan Highway between Spain and France. It was not a defined and explicit commission but a vague and ambitious idea, a challenge to open new proposals and experiences. The cold technology of large highways and the boring monotony of endless concrete and tar presented the problem of humanizing the Autoroutes du Sud in France.

The Taller de Arquitectura began this project with enthusiasm coinciding with the practical and theoretical studies on the problems of treating form at a large scale: in the present dynamic ecological process, man is the principal agressor, but is at the same time his own victim. An intervention removed from the cities has a decisive impact on the total configuration of a territory. The entire panorama and landscape is violated and modified and, as an answer to be built, it is necessary to design with the widest geographical scope as possible.

At the beginning of the works, the fundamental finding of the Taller de Arquitectura was to realize that the border position of the project was only a secondary element, anecdotic, a pure pretext to realize a masterpiece.

The highway was built to open communications between countries and for the passage of people. Catalonia has always been a warm country, of exchange and transit. Catalan culture has always known how to assimilate ideas and currents which have gone by the country. With the vision of the Pyrenees as an integrating axis of the Catalan territories, the Taller de Arquitectura deepened into the study of form and design of the landscape. We wanted to animate and humanize the long strip crossing from the Pyrenees, but the project, because of its magnitude, was not possible. Once the project program was reduced, the new proposal for the Parque de la Marca Hispánica as a majestic elevated promenade of more than a kilometer´s lenght was still too ambitious and the Taller de Arquitectura finally presented the design of the Pyramid as a definitive version.

The size and volume of the Pyramid (its square base measures 100 meters and is 80 meters high), is given by the accumulation of soil removed for the construction of the highway. The avoid filling up the surrounding valleys, the Taller de Arquitectura proposed the accumulation of the removed soil so that it would act as a dumping ground. The design of this truncated pyramid, with false perspectives and a classical French garden, was the proposal and answer by the Taller de Arquitectura to build, in the center of the Pyrenees, a work which could resiste comparison with nature, which would integrate itself to the violation of the landscape but recognizable as a different work, built and humanized.

The monument on top of the pyramid is a homage to Catalonia, with the four stripes which are the motif for its shield and flag. The leyend of the formation of this symbol of Catalan identity goes back to the 9th Century, when the Count Guifré el Pilós, wounded in a battle against the Arabs, was condecorated by the King of France with a new flag: with his hand wet with Count’s blood, he traced four red lines over his golden shield, exclaiming: “this will be your flag!”. The four red columns at the top of the pyramid in front of the yellow cube, reproduces the proportional height of the fingers of the hand which drew the flag.

The monument in hommage to Catalonia, with its Catalan stripes, next to the highway which simbolizes and materializae international cooperation and fraternity, has also symboli value of having departed from a purely laboratory architecture but has been submitted to a genus or Catalan historyc tradition, in such a way that it becomes in a totally positive contribution oriented towards the construction of a new Europe.
