To learn more about the big picture and understand what people in major academies and office did to stay positive and healthy.


What impressed you the most when you are abroad?

在纽约的骄傲月大游行那天,去Blue Note的路上被游行队伍挡住,被迫看到了各种团体近乎疯狂的表现。晚上还顺利见到了自己的偶像Kenny G,走回家的时候又被迫看了一遍游行,真的令人印象深刻。

During pride month in New York, I was blocked by the parade on my way to Blue Note, I was deeply impressed by people’s expression. I met Kenny G that night and went through the parade again when I tried to get home. What a day!


What do you miss the most about China?


I miss the food and my mom.


Will you come back China? Why?


yes, I will. Eventually.


Is it more distinct to view China in a different environment after going abroad? Any thought?


There are so many Chinese architecture students in American academies, I believe there will be more Chinese talents in the field standing out and compete with starchitects.


What makes the curriculum of your school different from other architecture schools?


Aesthetic is somehow emphasized which is unique in Penn. And we don’t talk about politics as much in design, at least for architecture.


What are the characteristics and interesting points of your firm?

现在所在的公司规模很大,有超过250个员工,有专门的LAB 团队设计数字交互的室内空间装置,还有一个非常酷的办公室。项目都非常有趣,有很大的发挥空间,在这里的工作非常愉快。

Rockwellgroup is a great company! There are over 250 people with a cool office. You can’t really ask for more. I love working here.


Who is your favorite artist (in wider range such as art, music, movie)? What is the influence?

最喜欢Kenny G, 是一个充满争议的艺术家,他完美的结合了高雅和通俗,是史上最畅销的器乐演奏家。对我的创作很有启发,除了设计出复杂的系统外还会注意形成一个明确的图形,两者的平衡会基本保证设计效果。

The most inspiring one for me is Kenny G. He is a controversial artist, combining jazz music and pop music. And he is a best seller. He taught me to balance complex systems and defined figure, which is very important in general.


What fascinates viewers the most in your portfolio in your opinion?


It’s a document recording personal growth. There are so many brilliant ideas on different scales. Every project is very well controlled achieving a balance between complex and simple.


When did you start to follow gooood? Any suggestions?


Started when I was a little boy, hope you can keep growing.

The fact that Manhattan has served as the receptor of global capital has maintained its status as a global leader. Now the city is exhausted with an oversupply of new condominiums with its leadership being challenged by other cities including London, Dubai, Hong Kong and Tokyo. How Will New York respond to this Challenge? The triumvirate of easy money, cheap imports and strong confidence catalyze growth in Western economies. New York City’s financial global leadership has been sustained by the culmination of all three. Today these are coming to an end, interest rates are increasing, low cost retailers such as American Apparel and Radio Shack have filed for bankruptcy, and an uncertain political climate have shaken confidence in the U.S. economy. All three components have threatened New York City as the Global financial capital. In the studio, we speculate that a new airport typology can help sustain New York City’s financial global leadership in the world. To maintain its leadership, export opportunities to and in developing economies are more likely to fuel growth. So, we propose to combine logistics system with human space to explore new spaces in the future while sustaining high efficiency. Instead of hiding, we try to integrate the logistic system into human space with the pursuit of light to create special phenomenon for new experiences.

Packages will be unloaded from cargo and transported into the new airport, where they will be filtered and sorted for storage and transportation. Packages are stored in different storages depending on their terms of transportation. The façade reflects the inner systems.

Egalitarian Nature: Vertical Green Park For Urban Areas

The Egalitarian Nature skyscraper imagines a new building typology driven by the human urge for nature instead of capital. It is a new kind of infrastructure conceived to serve the whole society. The traditional skyscraper is reimagined as a mountain range that provides a new way to experience nature within an urban environment. A zigzag-climbing path is developed along with abstract spaces that encourage an unexpected engagement between people and nature. Accessing the tower is not decided by capital but individual physical strength.

This design proposal explores a new possibility of tower typology and lifestyle in a high-density urban environment by rethinking the relationship between humans and nature. In future city planning, the existing free land may not be sufficient for building parks or gardens. However, the need for these areas is imperative and this skyscraper provides the opportunity for large green spaces within a small footprint. The tower is a combination of nature and a man-made environment. It is conceived as a vertical mountain in the center of a city: a mountain for all the people to hike or climb.




From the day when skyscraper was born, it is the instrument of the ruling class. It is an object of consumerism and symbolism emphasizing ambition instead of living conditions. Till the recent, air rights become the new scoring point in the game of capital. The chase of height never stops. And the unfair situation will never change until a new type of skyscraper shows up, not driven by capital but nature instead. It offers the entire society a fair opportunity to engage with the new vertical nature space. The accessibility will not be granted by financial status but physical strength of the individual since there will not be elevators for capital gamers.


Skyscraper should be an object of new free egalitarian state. The goal is to eliminate the hierarchy and social model associated with anything in the world and search for a new freedom in which everyone can reach different grade. Skyscraper should not be a privilege for the ruling classes, it should manifests itself as a device for everyone. The deconstruction of skyscraper’s significances, frees itself from induced needs and desires. Skyscraper does not lead to object or requirements that are predefined in its formal and volumes anymore, so that it lives with freedom and equal levels. It also gives a potential new way of living for all the skyscraper users.



“The distance between man and man which generate the way in which people gather and therefore ‘the place’: if a person is alone the place is a small room; if they are two together it is a larger room; if they are ten it is a school; if a hundred, a theater; if a thousand, an assembly hall; if ten thousand, a city; if a million, a metropolis…” –Superstudio.

Spaces within the skyscraper are in total freedom and flexibility. From one space to another space, from one surface to another surface, there is no difference. Places are only dependent on the distance between humans and their relationship with spatial volumes. The continual human movements and interactions give each space a programmatic meaning.

Typical skyscraper typology has very designated spaces: lobby, office/residential units and amenity. Each program has designated position within the tower as well, with a vertical core connected in between, which is the only connection between different levels. In our new proposal, programs are flexibly allocated along the climbing path integrating with nature mountain. The traffic core is now replaced by a mountain valley creating new possibilities of space arrangement. A new relationship among people, nature and architecture is developed to stimulate unexpected events.

CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE DETAILS:Develop innovative architecture with car design technology

项目由设计研究开始,重点关注汽车设计技术,探究人和机器空间之间的关系及相应的空间类型。我们选择三种美学细节设计技术, 连结、嵌套和汇聚,进行一系列研究。尝试不同的操作方式,将他们发展为一个精巧融合的3d物体。同时研究汽车工业的材料,并在美学细节中测试。继续发展,将这些设计技术应用到建筑尺度,自然而然形成了一个汽车展览中心。在连结、嵌套和汇聚三种美学设计技术的共同作用下,外立面准确展现出了相关的汽车美学特性。在建筑内部,一系列黑色的体量互相连结,作为主要结构互相支撑,他们同时作为汽车展示空间,人的空间嵌套其中。一些玻璃圆管从黑色体量中通过汇聚的方法生长出来,作为存放汽车的地方,为人们提供了新的观察视角。

The project started with design research focusing on car aesthetics and created new spatial typology exploring relationships between machine and human. We selected 3 aesthetic details, interlocking, nesting, converging, and specific design techniques are developed through various iterations. We explored different possibilities of these details and techniques to develop an object intending for delicate integrations. We also studied materials from car industry and tested them in the details. Then we proposed to apply these techniques in architectural scale. We designed a community center whose program is mainly car exhibition. The exterior surfaces have been carefully designed through aesthetics techniques we researched. Aesthetical seams are flowing on the surface and theses seams also connected with structural details from visual and functional aspect. Also, some parts of the façade were poked by structural volumes which not only play a role in supporting interior structure, but also create a contrast between the soft seams and the sharp edge. For the interior structure, A series of black volumes are developed to be interlocking and supporting with each other for car space. The volumes are acting as the primary structure of the building are human spaces are nesting with them. A dichotomy between human and machine is created regarding these two kinds of spaces. And we further developed the relationship with various interactions between car and human. The glass tubes on the volumes are designed through converging technique to literally hold the cars, providing new experiences for people to look at the cars.

The three techniques are applied on this 3d object creating a new aesthetic! In the process, different parameters are adjusted again and again and again and again………… The physical model makes it convincing!

Cars will be able to get to different levels though the center spiral ramp, entering different display pods which provide new perspectives and spatial experiences for users.

车辆立面研究 | Car Elevation Study


The car elevations are studied in a mathematical way to figure out the specific parameters of the curves including angles length and ratio composing the unique aesthetic of the car. These study results are later acting as major principles to create the building elevation for same aesthetics.

In the rapid development of urban sprawl process, urban tourism has been a complex urban issue without a systematic solution because of various stakeholders and conflicts. Urban tourism districts are facing more stress than ever from urban dynamics and become over-burdened, unable to provide pleasant touring experiences. The project locates in West Lake Tourism District, the most important urban Landscape in Hangzhou, facing the great challenge of high-density urban pressure.

The scheme tries to take advantage of digital design methodology and local spatial heritage study to explore new possibilities to redevelop local urban spaces to respond to high-density urban pressure. The idea is to increase local spatial capacity of Su Causeway which functions as the main visiting space and redefine local urban spatial configuration, trying to take control of the complexity of local urban environment. With proper urban complexity, the tourism system will be able to redistribute extensive urban dynamics providing better experiences for urban visitors.

Urban complexity theory is working as the general mothod of urban manipulations, control the degree of complexity in different systems is the core idea. When it comes to urabn scale, it would be difficult to distinguish chaos and orders. So i’m trying to control urban relationships in a more general way hoping to balance urban systems and create a healthy tourism ecology.

West Lake Tourism District has been acting as an important role for Hangzhou City and China in various dimensions including culture, politics and economies. It has become the most important city image of Hangzhou and China, thus the government and social organizations have spent huge efforts developing the tourism district. And the district has proved to be one of the most rewarding public project to optimize urban relationships. Various factors from different dimensions in the development of West Lake landscape are studied chronologically. After basic infrastructure and optimization are completed in the early stage, people are attracted to the area and the community was reactivated leading to rapid development. And the tendency was even further enhanced by later political focus and the problem is the physical spatial capacity and infrastructure have not been developed accordingly. With recent social focus and increase of tourists, there are no comprehensive improvement on infrastructure and whole environment in West Lake district. So as a result, the whole system is now at the edge of crash because of growing urban pressures and the next-level infrastructure development is badly needed. It is the starting point of my project, trying to restore the cultural and political positions and functions by improving landscape architectural system redefining local urban configuration.

旅游机制研究 | Tourism Mechnism Study


Since the urban pressure caused the crash of West Lake tourism district the purpose of improving local infrastructure is to improve the quality of visiting experience and restore local cultural heritage. So, through all the research, it turns out that the quality of experience is decided by multiple factors including tourists’ personal features, tourism behavior and tourism motivation in West Lake. There are six main motivations of tourists, and there are closely related behaviors happening in West Lake district. This diagram achieves to sort out the urban dynamics, deciding the programs and infrastructure development in later process.


社交催化网络 | Social Enabler network


There are many historical Chinese traditional pavilions in West Lake district with special social functions. People will gather at those pavilions and have social activities. The pavilions now are acting as important cultural elements in local area with multiple functions and cultural heritage value, I call them social enablers. Starting from these pavilions, I’m taking advantage of digital techniques to redevelop those pavilions with consistent logic. The new social enablers will be transformed both vertically and horizontally and planted on Su causeway to stimulate social activities and increase spatial capacity.


融合的社交景观体系 | integrated social landscape system


A new landscape architecture system integrated with Su causeway is generated including social enabler network, differentiated spatial structure and architectural volume. The system indicates the tendency of spatial phenomenon transition from closed to open. On the urban side, the system is more closed containing more functions and programs for urban dynamics. Visitors will enter at the urban side and get access to the museum, exhibition, the restaurant and liabrary programs. The cells are integrated with each other, visitors will discover the orientation of the space and attracted be the various social public spaces. This is spatial structuration of the proposal, the complexity of original space is not enough so the chaos will disturb each other and . The system will redefine the paths of different visitors, so there will be a more organized environment. The unhuman scale problem will be solved as well while the original Su causeway space is linear and boring with long walking distance.


城市缓冲器 | Urban Buffer



The general idea of the whole system is to act as the urban buffer in local district redistributing urban dynamics. When urban pressure impacts come to stress the Su causeway, the newly inserted architectural system will function as a buffer increasing local spatial capacity and create various spaces for different urban visitors like runners, riders and tourists. Different urban participants will cognize the spatial configuration and arrange themselves into related spaces for specific interactions.

The application of of digital design techniques created differentiated spaces reshaping urban configuration. A series of spaces are generated according to the main logic of the entire curve and integrate with each other creating interactive spatial relationships. The special architecture language will redefine local cultural aesthetics and local spatial reorientation. Visitors will be better connected with West Lake and have a deeper understanding of local culture and lifestyle.

The project is inspired by the fact that people on the stage will have longer lasting memories than the audience. Based on psychological study, we can understand this fact with the knowledge of semantic memory and episodic memory. The former is for the audience, the latter is for the people on the stage whose memory will be enhanced by the stage effects. And the mechanism is further developed into our key concept, to create hierarchical stages in everyday life for theatrical effects on people’s behavior to simulate longer lasting memory. There are two paths to achieve this goal, first is to directly create programs on stages, and the second is to force people as the audience to respond to the stage, even transform the seats into stage. And we Looked into several specific theatrical spaces including theater and stadium and developed a center stage complex with new organizations of programs to trigger the interactive effects. On an urban scale, the hierarchical idea is also applied in the relationship between the context and center object. One of the scenes is standing on the towers and looking through the “seats” to the center stage, transforming the “seats” to a stage for the towers in a certain way. The audience is pushed onto the stage for longer lasting memories.

In theatrical space, the reactions of front audience will affect the audience in the back as part of their theatrical experience, forming certain event memory sequence. Ideally, they enhance each other’s memory. In this event, actors on the stage will have most unforgettable memory, then the audience. Thus making it logical to emphasize urban stage space and try to involve more urban audience in stage events.

Reverse courtyard

In local urban environment, traditional houses and modern urban fabric are entangled together producing numerous chaos, losing their own identity. Local courtyards are malfunctioning as space for mere traffic purpose instead of space for vitality. And the houses surrounding the yards are enclosed and designed for privacy, unfit for public programs. Responding to this situation, we chose to preserve the existing buildings and old streets in memory of local history and propose to reverse the solid -open relationship of chosen community by cutting its perimeter. The manipulation created a series of new courtyards from houses themselves, composing a new boundary interface. The traditional interior is now converted to exterior, defined as new yard spaces, showing new architectural attitude to local environment. Furthermore, the reverse essentially changed the isolated condition of local and urban environment by making new yards penetrating towards city. In the cutting process, an observation deck was created from a 5F modern building as a reminder for the city. It was connected to rooftop space circulation, which brings people to different levels to experience the previous lifestyle with a new perspective.

Digital fabrication

The aim of this program is to extract some interesting qualities from a painting which is merged from two masterpieces of painting on the “Ostagram” and then develop these qualities to apply on the facade of a building. In the process,we extracted crispy, rough and feathering as aesthetics to develop. Concrete milling is the chosen manufacturing technology for the façade.
