everyone album NO.13 – everyone × Square Dancing
Public space is important for people to live and communicate in the city. Square dancing is a unique public exercise in China. From metropolis like Beijing and Shanghai, to small towns in the countryside, we can find dancers in every public space when night comes. There are many dancing styles in square dancing, including group dance, folk dance, Jitterbug, shuffle dance, ballroom dance and disco dance, etc. Most of the participants are elder people and they could start dancing wherever they put on the music. Everyone could join in and even foreign people would enjoy the activity to experience this “Chinese Style”. Though square dancing is popular among elder people, residents could be annoyed by the loud music and sometimes there would be conflicts between them. How do people use city’s public space to dance and how do they look at it? We randomly interviewed some dancers and pedestrians in front of the VIVA and in the Olympic Forest Park to see their opinions on square dancing and public space.
Due to the dancers, they usually come to dance after diner at around seven, and go back home at nine to ten according to the situation. Under the instruction by a dancing teacher, people gathered spontaneously. They think square dancing is China’s most popular exercise which could not only make people healthier, but also help them to meet more friends. The dancers would take the residents’ right into consideration and look for a quiet and large place to dance. Illumination is also an important feature for the place and some people think it should fit the music and dance better. When talk about ideal public space, convenient transportation is necessary. They think that there are not enough spaces for elder people and we could develop some squares for dancing in the city parks.
As the two squares we chose have some distance from the residential area, the pedestrians did not show unhappiness about square dancing. They thing the activity makes the city more lively. It is people’s right to use public space as they like and square dancing could make use of the space efficiently. As elder people might feel lonely, it is important for them to take part in group activities and build relationship with the community. According to the interviewees, an ideal public space should be free and open to everyone. People could move their bodies and entertain themselves in the space, as well as sharing music, art and ideas.
