Cloud Square is a site-specific installation by polish artist Karolina Halatek, that premiered this November at After Dark, an event at Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis, USA. The installation invites all types of viewers to be immersed in a cloud-like phenomenon of fog mixed with the dazzling white light, bringing the audience closer to the “sky experience”. The title refers to the form as well as to the meeting point where everyone gathers, while forest setting, fog and house-shaped location of the work fluxes the nature with a sense of home.

The essence of the work comes from the imaginary super-natural sensation of clarity, light and extended space. The circular-shaped immersive installation is designed for a personal experience. An individual viewer while interacting with the work has the possibility to discover a new dimension of own presence in the contemplative, pure and abstract environment. Title of the work refers to the natural optical phenomena seen around the sun or moon, produced by light in the interaction of ice crystals. The first references of the atmospheric phenomenon can be found in a section of the “Official History of the Chin Dynasty” (Chin Shu) from 637, on the “Ten Haloes”, giving technical terms for 26 solar halos.

In the exhibition, the place of the celestial body is given to the art viewer, who becomes a central part of the piece. Installation was inspired by a sensation of the artist during intercessory prayer. Karolina Halatek concentrates on works that involve human perception to unveil new dimensions of existence that are on the edge of human knowledge, unknown territories that balance between seen and unseen. The creative process of constructing light reminds an experimental lab where the final outcome of designing the art experience becomes unpredictable and unique. Halo is all about the human and the inner light that every man has the potential to discover.

The light sculpture Terminal was inspired by the near-death experiences of people, who returned from unconsciousness, reported their experiences at the threshold of death. Suddenly Terminal, the oversized light-sculpture by Polish artist Karolina Halatek. The artist uses light as a key element and material for her installations and videos.

In the focus of her work lies the power of light as something real and yet not tangible. The experience with light art is a visual one, that frees from all trivialities, an “experience of wordless thought” (J. Turrell). “Light is a means, to simply express things,” says the artist in an interview. With light, she creates empirical, site-specific spaces, and light objects at the surface of the visual, architectural, and sculptural. The artistic intention coincides almost exactly with the aesthetic described as a “discovery through light”.

“It is not the spectacular that is crucial. Much more it is about the power of the artist’s content, who makes light in its intensity experienceable and perceptible. The cultural scientist Hartmut Böhme mentions “spaces, that are built through the media of light, in which we dive in as spectators”. “Light art is empty,” it continues, “although eventful, because it doesn’t show objects nor content, but enables sensual and physical experiences, and conveys forms of aesthetics.” This description applies directly to the sensual experience of the spectator in the light-sculpture Terminal – in which you walk through the light tunnel and experience a light bath on your own body.
